הרמב"ם פותח את הל' תעניות בזה, שהענין דקביעת תענית על מאורע מסויים הוא כדי שלא "יאמרו דבר זה ממנהג העולם אירע לנו וצרה זו נקרה נקרית", ועאכו"כ מאורע של "עשירי בטבת" הנוגע לכללות עם ישראל, "סמך מלך בבל על ירושלים", שזו היתה הסיבה וההתחלה לענין החורבן וכו' – אלא זהו לתועלת בנ"י, לעורר אותם בתשובה ולתקן את ענינים הדרושים. הירידה היא צורך עלי'. ועפי"ז מובן, שכשמגיע יום זה אין ליפול ביאוש ועצבות ח"ו מירידה המבהילה שהתחילה דוקא ביום עשירי דחודש העשירי (ש"העשירי יהי' קודש"), ואדרבה – זה צריך לעורר "מרירות" ותשובה, ותשובה מאהבה, לבטל את סיבת הגלות, ועי"ז מתחזקת תקוות הגאולה באופן של "אראנו נפלאות" – יתרון האור. ובפרט שנמצאים כעת לאחרי תפלת מנחה ובמקום קדוש וכו'. ונוסף על ההתבוננות בסיבת התענית וכו', יש להוסיף ביום זה בתורה, עבודה וגמ"ח בפועל.

משיחת עשרה בטבת – יהפך לשמחה – ה'תשמ"א

The Rambam states at the beginning of the Laws of Fasts that the purpose of a fast day is for a person to recognize that the events commemorated by the fast day are not a “chance occurrence” etc.; especially the 10th of Teves, when “the king of Bavel laid siege to Yerushalayim,” marking the beginning of the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash etc. Ultimately, these events are for the benefit of the Jewish people, to arouse them to do teshuvah and correct whatever needs to be corrected etc. – a “descent for the sake of ascent.” Therefore, it is understood that on a day like this, one should not fall into despair or sadness, chas v’shalom, over the frightening downfall that began specifically on the tenth day of the tenth month (whereas the verse states, “the tenth shall be holy”). On the contrary, a person should feel bitterness and be moved to teshuvah motivated by love, to undo the cause of the exile. This approach will strengthen one’s hope for the Redemption, at which time “I will show them wonders” – “the advantage of light from the darkness.” Especially since we have already davened Minchah and we are in a holy place etc. In addition to contemplating the reason for the fast, one should increase in Torah, service, and acts of kindness.

חומר הענין של הצום דעשרה בטבת (שלכן צמים בו גם אם זה הי' חל בשבת) הוא כי המאורע שאירע בעשרה בטבת – "סמך מלך בבל אל ירושלים" – היתה הפתיחה למאורעות דשאר הצומות – התחלת כללות החורבן. וזה שהחורבן לא הי' בבת אחת, כי מלמעלה נתנו לבנ"י משך זמן לנצלו לעשיית התשובה ובכך לבטל את החורבן בפועל. וההוראה: לנצל את הזמן שנשאר עד התחלת הצום לעשיית התשובה, ויש בזה את הכח להבאת הגאולה האמיתית והשלימה בפשטות וממילא תתבטל התענית. ויה"ר שהשליחות מצוה לצדקה תפעל שתיכף ומיד יתעורר בכ"א את ה"הרהור תשובה" בתוקף המתאים.

The fast of Asarah B’Teves is more severe than the other fast days instituted by the Sages in that, if it were to fall on Shabbos (although according to the fixed calendar it cannot), we would fast even on Shabbos. The reason this fast day is particularly severe is because “On this very day the king of Bavel laid siege to Yerushalayim” – this marked the beginning and opening of the subsequent events that led to the other fast days. The reason the destruction did not happen all at once was to give the Jewish people time to do teshuvah, and thereby prevent the destruction from taking place. The lesson is that one should utilize the remaining time before the fast begins to do teshuvah, which has the power to bring about the true and complete Redemption literally, thus nullifying the fast. May it be Hashem’s will that the act of appointing everyone here as a shliach for the mitzvah of tzedakah should awaken within them a proper “thought of teshuvah” etc.

הוראה ממ"ש בהתחלת פ' ויחי "ויחי יעקב בארץ מצרים וגו'" עפ"י ביאור אדה"ז בזה שע"י ש"את יהודה שלח לפניו להורות לפניו גשנה" – "לתקן לו בית תלמוד", לימוד התורה, יכול להיות "ויחי" גם בארץ מצרים! אבל גם אז – ח"ו לחשוב שגלות הוא מקום המתאים ליהודי, אלא כל זמן שהוא נמצא בגלות ה"ה מכריז, צועק ומבקש מהקב"ה "ונשאתני ממצרים"! וכאשר מרגישים שגלות אינו מקומם האמיתי – מובן שכאשר הקב"ה נותן שטחים של א"י מחזיקים בהם בשתי ידים ואינם מוותרים מאומה! וכן בנוגע שטחים של חו"ל הנוגעים לבטחונם של בנ"י שבא"י שאין לוותר ח"ו עליהם. וכאשר יפסיקו לפחד מהגוי ומ"גוישקייט", ויתנהגו עפ"י רצונו של הקב"ה, נעשים הם ה"בעלי-בתים" על המציאות כולה!

As the Alter Rebbe explains, the reason Yaakov was able to “live in the land of Egypt” is because he had already “‘sent Yehudah ahead to Goshen’ – to establish a house of Torah study.” But even then, chas v’shalom for a Jew to think that exile is fitting place for him; rather, as long as a Jew is in exile, he cries out and pleads with Hashem to “Carry me out of Egypt!” And when Jews feel that exile is not their true place, then obviously, when Hashem grants them additional territory in Eretz Yisroel, they hold on to it with both hands and do not relinquish even an inch. Similarly, they must not chas v’shalom relinquish any territory that affects the security of the Jewish people, even if it is not part of Eretz Yisroel itself. When Jews stop being afraid of goyim and goyishkeit, and conduct themselves according to Hashem’s will, then they are given control over all of reality.
