1) הצורך בחכמות חיצוניות אינו אלא בשביל התועלת בעבודת ה'. ולכן, האפשרות לקושיא מצד חכמות חיצוניות אינה אלא במקום שיש תירוץ ע"ז בחכמה דקדושה. אמנם, התכלית היא לנצל את החכמות החיצוניות עצמם שעל ידם תתורץ קושיא על קדושה. (מובן ופשוט שאין זה הכשר ח"ו ללימוד חכמות חיצוניות.... כוונת הדברים היא רק לאלה שמאיזו סיבה למדו כבר חכמות חיצוניות, שעליהם לנצלן להחזקת היהדות). 2) יש עסק "ביטוח חיים". במקום לילך ולהכריז "מי האיש החפץ חיים", שיש לו עצה לאריכות ימים (כמסופר בגמ'), הוא (כיון שזקוק לפרנסה) הולך ומכריז להיפך – שצריך לדאוג ולהסדיר עכשיו מה יקרה אם ח"ו לא יאריך ימים, ובמילא כדאי לשלם סכום מסויים בכל שנה שבבוא הזמן ח"ו תשלם חברת הביטוח עבורו וכו'. אבל באמת, אפי' חברת הביטוח עצמה רוצה שלקוחותי' יאריכו ימים...! הלימוד בעבודת ה': רצונה האמיתית של הנשמה היא לא להמית את הגוף ונפה"ב. ענין "הזכרת יום המיתה" צ"ל רק בלית ברירה כיש צורך להפחיד את הגוף ונפה"ב. ועיקרה של הפחדה זו אינה אלא כדי להוציא מהגוף את ה"תשלום" שצריכים לשלם להקב"ה מידי יום ע"י לימוד התורה וקיום המצוות מתוך שמירת בריאות הגוף לאויוש"ט.

(1) The need for secular wisdom is only to be used for Divine service. Therefore, a question rising from secular wisdom can exist only when there is an answer to it in holy wisdom. But the ultimate purpose of secular wisdom is to utilize the wisdom itself for holiness. (Obviously, this isn’t chas v’shalom a stamp of approval for the study of secular wisdom; the intent is only that those who, for whatever reason, have already studied secular wisdom should use it to strengthen Yiddishkeit.) (2) These days there is a business of selling “life insurance.” Instead of going around and proclaiming, “Who is the man who desires life” and offering advice for long life (like the story in the Gemara), a person goes around (because he needs a livelihood) and proclaims the opposite: that one must make arrangements in case chas v’shalom he doesn’t live a long life, by paying a certain amount every year so that if chas v’shalom something happens, the insurance company will make a payout etc. But the truth is that even the insurance company itself wants its clients to live long lives….The lesson for Divine service: The true desire of the soul is not to cause the death of the body and the animal soul. The practice of “reminding oneself of the day of death” is only to be used as a last resort, when there is a need to frighten the body and the animal soul. And the primary purpose of frightening the body this way is only to extract the “payment” it must pay to Hashem every day by studying Torah and keeping mitzvos, while preserving the health of the body for many long and good years.

התוועדות זו קשורה עם שבת מבה"ח שבט. בדורנו זה ניתוסף בו ענין מיוחד‏ – ‏יום ההילולא של עשירי בשבט. בנוגע ליום ההילולא כותב אדה"ז שאז עולה "פעולתו אשר עבד בה", וזה פסוק בהפטורת פ' וארא שבו מדובר אודות ענינים דלעו"ז והפיכתם לעניני קדושה, שזוהי כללות הכוונה בירידת הנשמה בגוף בכלל, ובגלות בפרט. וזוהי ההכנה ל"אנכי אעלך גם עלה" בגאולה אמיתית והשלימה. ובשבת זו מברכים את החודש בשש הענינים "לששון ולשמחה וכו'" ומסיימים "ונאמר אמן"‏ – ‏שזה באופן נצחי גם בעוה"ז, ובמילא ההכנה לזה צ"ל עבודה באופן של תקיפות והחלטיות ש"לא ישוב לכסלה עוד". והדרך לעבודה זו כבר סלולה ע"י נשיאי ישראל עד לשלשת האבות‏ – ‏"וארא אל אברהם וגו'", וכמ"ש כמ"פ הכוונה בפרש"י על פסוק זה "אל האבות"‏ – ‏להדגיש שהיותם ה"אבות" דכ"א‏ – ‏הצד השווה ביניהם‏ – ‏זה מה שנוגע ליצי"מ ולגאולה העתידה וכו'.

This farbrengen is in connection with the Shabbos preceding the month of Shevat, which has many unique themes, including, in our generation, the yom hilula of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, on 10 Shevat. The Alter Rebbe writes that on a tzaddik’s yom hilula, “the work in which he worked” ascends above etc.; citing a verse from the haftorah of Parashas Va’eira, which discusses the transformation of kelipah to holiness, which is the general purpose of the soul’s decent into the body in general, and its decent into exile in particular. And this what prepares for the time when “I will also bring you up again,” upon the true and complete Redemption. On this Shabbos we bless the new month with the six expressions, “for gladness and for joy…,” and we conclude with “and let us say Amen,” which confirms it an eternal reality even in this world; therefore, the way to prepare for this is also to decide firmly and resolutely to “never to return to foolishness again.” The path for this service has already been paved by the Nesi’im of the Jewish people, going all the way back to the three Avos – “I appeared to Avraham, etc.”; meaning, as Rashi explains, “to the Avos,” emphasizing that what is relevant to the Exodus from Egypt and the future Redemption is the quality shared equally by Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov – the fact that they are the Avos of every Jew.

[המשך] בהתחשב עם העובדה שאין דבר יקר יותר כענין הזמן, וכאשר אינם מנצלים אותו כדרוש ה"ז אבידה שאא"פ להחזירה, ובכל זאת, כאשר מגיע יום ההילולא של כ"ק אדמו"ר הזקן, לוקחים משך זמן כדי להתוועד ולהתבונן ב"כל עמלו אשר עמל בו במשך כל ימי חייו", מובן, שזהו ע"מ שזה יביא לידי מעשה בפועל ש"הוא העיקר". ואופן העשי' צ"ל שזה יפעול גם "בקרב הארץ": שגם כאשר נמצאים בחושך כפול ומכופל של עקבתא דמשיחא, לא נבהלים, אלא פועלים בהפצת היהדות בכלל והפצת המייענות במיוחד באופן של "גזירתי בתחתונים" ובשמחה ובטוב לבב! וזוהי המסקנא הראשונה ש"מצדיקה" את הזמן שלוקחים עבור ההתוועדות, שעי"ז יתווסף שלא בערך ב"עמלו אשר עמל בו", שהעיקר בזה הוא את "הנפש אשר עשו", באופן ש"פועל ישועות בקרב הארץ". ומ"ישועות" הפרטיים אלו בהפצת היהדות והמייענות, יבואו לגאולה האמיתית והשלימה.

[Continued] Although there is nothing more precious than time, we take time on the Alter Rebbe’s yom hilulah to farbreng and to reflect upon “all the work that he toiled throughout all the days of his life,” in a way that results in action. And the action must be done in a way that has an effect even “in the midst of the land,” meaning: even when one finds himself in the doubled and redoubled darkness of the time of the footsteps of Moshiach, one is not deterred, but rather engages in spreading Yiddishkeit in general, and the wellsprings of Chassidus in particular, in such a way that “My decree is kept in the lower realm,” and with joy and gladness of heart. This is the first takeaway that justifies the time spent on this farbrengen: the fact that it will lead to an immeasurable increase in “the work in which he toiled,” which primarily is “the souls he amassed,” and in a way that “works salvations in the midst of the land.” And from these individual “salvations” in spreading Yiddishkeit and the wellsprings of Chassidus, we will come to the true and complete Redemption.
