א) "אין צו אלא לשון זירוז, מיד ולדורות". ההוראה מזה – בשתים: 1) העבודה בכל עניני תומ"צ צ"ל בזריזות, וכמ"ש אדה"ז (באגה"ק) גודל מעלת הזריזות וכו' 2) הפעולה של עבודתו בכל עניני תומ"צ צ"ל לא רק על כל בנ"י שבדורו אלא גם "ולדורות"!. ב) בטעם מצות חביתי כה"ג [שבהתחלת שני דפ' צו], מבאר בספר החינוך שמצד יחודו של הכה"ג וכו' ראוי שיהי' לו קרבן מיוחד תמיד בכל יום כמו תמידי הצבור וכו', ובעבודה: כה"ג הוא בחי' היחידה של כלל ישראל, ועד"ז ישנה בחי' היחידה בנשמת כ"א שפועלת בו תמיד במשך כל היום, אבל זוהי בבחי' מקיף, וכדי שתפעל פעולתה גם באופן פנימי ה"ז ע"י שממשיכים אותה בפרטים וכו' – "זאת תורת החטאת" זאת תורת האשם" שבהמשך השיעור חומש.

(a) On the opening verse of parashas Tzav, Rashi writes: “Tzav always connotes urging, immediately and for future generations.” The lesson is twofold: (1) All aspects of Torah and mitzvos must be done with alacrity, in line with the Alter Rebbe’s discussion in Iggeres HaKodesh about the tremendous quality of alacrity etc. (2) One’s service must affect not only all the Jewish people of his generation, but also future generations. (b) Sefer HaChinuch explains that the reason for the Chavitei Kohen Gadol (discussed in sheini of parashas Tzav) is because due to the unique status of the Kohen Gadol, it is fitting that he offer a special korban every day, similar to the Tamid offered every day on behalf of the public. In terms of divine service: The Kohen Gadol represents the level of Yechidah of the entire Jewish people. Similarly, there is the Yechidah within every Jew, which constantly affects a Jew throughout the entire day. But the Yechidah exists in a manner of makif, and for it to be internalized, it must expressed in the details etc., as the parashah goes on to describe: “This is the law of the Chatas”; “This is the law of the Asham” etc.

[המשך] וזהו הטעם מדוע החל אז כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר לכתוב ולפרסם זכרונותיו בשפות שונות. דלכאו', בכדי לקרב יהודי ליהדות מדוע שולחים אליו "זכרונות" במקום לשלוח אליו מאמר חסידות קל בשפה המובנת לו וכו'?! אלא מכיון שראו שישנם יהודים שלא יכניסו לבתיהם ענין שאין להם משיכה לנפש-הבהמית, ולכן, מכיון שהרי התוכן צ"ל של תומ"צ, שינו עכ"פ את הצורה החיצונית של הדברים – לצורה של סיפורים וזכרונות, ולבסוף – ימשכו גם לתוכן הדברים. דעפ"י שכל דקדושה אין מקום לכתיבת זכרונות על חשבון כתיבת מאמרי חסידות וכו', אלא כאשר מדובר אודות הצלת יהודי רגע לפני הטביעה בנהר ר"ל – אין מקום לחשבונות, ואם אא"פ להציל אותו בדרך אחרת "מושכים" אותו ע"י סיפור [אבל] עם תוכן כזה שיעמיד אותו בסוף בקרן אורה. וכך מעמידים "זרעו בחיים" אפי' בארמ"צ, ועי"ז "הוא בחיים". אלא שעפ"י דין, אין אדם מקיים מצות פרי' ורבי' אא"כ לילדים עצמם יש ילדים, ולכן לא מספיק ש"זרעו" בחיים, אלא ה"זרעו" עצמם צריכים לדאוג להחיות אחרים.

(Continued.) And this is the reason why my father-in-law, the Rebbe, began writing and publishing his memoirs at the time, and in different languages. Seemingly, if the goal is draw a Jew closer to Yiddishkeit, why would he send a book of memoirs rather than a maamar Chassidus that he can understand etc.? The answer is that there were Jews who were so focused on the wants of the animal soul that they wouldn’t even allow a maamar into their home; therefore, he put material whose content is Torah and mitzvos in the external form of stories and memoirs, so that they would read it and ultimately be drawn to the inner content as well. This explains how he could devote his time to writing memoirs at the expense of composing maamarim (which seemingly is totally illogical): when it comes to saving a Jew from drowning in the sea of ignorance Rachmana litzlan, there is no room for logical calculations – if one cannot be pulled out of the water with a maamar etc., then he must be pulled out with a story whose content will eventually place him in a place of light. In this way it is possible to raise “offspring who are alive” even in Egypt, and thereby “he, too is alive.” But according to halacha, a person does not fulfill the mitzvah of pru u’rvu unless one’s children have children of their own. Therefore, it is not enough that “his offspring is alive”; rather, those offspring must themselves make sure to give life to others.

בהשתדלות כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שיהי' "זרעו בחיים" מצינו ב' קצוות מן הקצה אל הקצה: הוא תבע בתוקף (מאלו השייכים) דרגות נעלות ביותר בעבודת ה', ובאותו זמן פעל עם אלו שלא היו שייכים לשום דבר רק להזכירם על היותם יהודים; ולכן ראו "במדינה ההיא" שפעל בבת-אחת, ובאותה התלהבות ומסירות נפש, שיהודי בפינה נדחת ידע קריאת א"ב ובפינה אחרת ילמדו חסידות במשך כל הלילה דליל שישי! ועד"ז כאשר הגיע לארצות-הברית היתה העבודה בב' הקצוות: באתו זמן שייסד ישיבה שבה ילמדו חסידות וכו' דאג שילמדו א"ב עם אותם ילדים מבתי-ספר עממיים שאינם מקבלים שום חינוך דתי וכו'! והיא הנותנת: מכיון שהעבודה והרגש הזולת שיהי' "זרעו בחיים" הי' חדור עם עצם הנפש, שמסר חייו על זה, לא יכול להיות בזה שום חשבון דשכל, ולכן זה לא הי' משנה מה היו צריכים לפעול על הזולת, דבר נעלה ביותר או פשוט ביותר – ברגע שמדובר אודות יהודי, נמשך "העצם אל העצם" והתמסר לזה במס"נ ו"מצוה – בגדול" [המשך יבוא].

In the efforts of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, to ensure that his “offspring is alive,” we find two opposite extremes: On the one hand, he firmly demanded from those connected to him the highest levels of Divine service, and at the same time, he worked with those who had to even be reminded that they are Jews. This is why we saw in Russia that he worked on sending a melamed to one faraway place to teach Alef-Beis at the same time and with the same enthusiasm and mesiras nefesh as his work to ensure that Chassidim in a different community would study Chassidus the entire Thursday night. Similarly, when he arrived in the United States, the work was in both extremes: He founded a yeshivah where Chassidus would be studied in depth etc., and at the same time, he worked to ensure that public school children who had received no Jewish education at all would be taught Alef-Beis. And they both go together: Since his work and concern for others was imbued with the essence of his soul and he gave his life for it, there was no room for making logical calculations. Therefore, it didn’t matter what needed to be done for another Jew; as long as it involved another Jew, the “essence was drawn to the essence” and he devoted himself to it with mesiras nefesh (and when it comes to saving a life, it is a mitzvah for it to be done by a leader of the Jewish people).
