[בקשר למצות תפילין שבסיום פ' בא] במענה לשאלת רבים: דעתי ברורה שכעת על כ"א להניח גם תפילין דר"ת! וכמ"ש בכתבי האריז"ל שמצד התגברות החושך בעקבתא דמשיחא וכו' ה"ז חיוב ולא רק מנהג, ועד"ז היא מסקנת כו"כ מבעלי נגלה. ובפרט שניתוסף לאחרונה בהתפשטות חכמות חיצוניות שמטמאות את המוח ובמילא צריכים תוספת מיוחדת בעבודת המוחין שזהו ענינם של תפילין‏ – ‏לשעבד הלב והמוח (וכוונה זו שבמצוות תפילין היא חלק מהמצווה). אלא שכדי לא להכשל, יש להשיג לפנ"ז תפילין דר"ת או עכ"פ להיות בטוח לפ"ז שלא יהיו לו קשיים להניח תפילין דר"ת כל יום. ויש לפרסם את זה!

[In connection with the mitzvah of tefillin discussed at the end of parashas Bo:] In response to the question asked by many, my opinion is clear: at present, everyone must also don Rabbeinu Tam’s tefillin. As it says in Kisvei Ha’Arizal, due to the intensification of the darkness in the era of the approach of Moshiach etc., donning Rabbeinu Tam’s tefillin is an obligation, not merely a custom, and a similar conclusion has been reached in many seforim according to Nigleh as well. מצוה יש לקיים בגלל שכך צוה ה', מבלי לצפות לקבלת טובה. ובאמת, עצם ההתקשרות עם ה' שע"י קיום רצונו ה"ז השכר הכי גדול שיכול להיות – "שכר מצוה מצוה" – שמתקשר עם ה', אין סוף אמיתי. אבל אעפ"כ אי"ז מבטל את הסגולה והשכר שיש לכל מצוה בעניני עוה"ז ועוה"ב. סגולת מצות תפילין היא – קשירת ושיעבוד המוח והלב והיד להוראות הפרשיות שבתפילין: "שמע ישראל .. ה' אחד", "ואהבת את ה' אלקיך וגו'", שהסימן ע"ז הוא כשזה מביא לקיום מצוות מעשיות – "וקשרתם .. וכתבתם וגו'", והעיקר – ושננתם לבניך וגו'" – שמחנך גם את הילד באופן שמתחיל ומסיים את היום בקריאת-שמע וכו'. וזוהי הסגולה שבמצות תפילין – שמסייעת ליהודי להיות מושל ושולט על התאות שבלב ועל השכל שבראש.

A mitzvah must be fulfilled because Hashem commanded so, without anticipating reward for it. And the truth is that the greatest possible “reward for a mitzvah is the mitzvah itself” – the connection to the truly Infinite One that results from the mitzvah. Still, this does not negate the unique segulah and reward every mitzvah brings, both in this world and the World to Come. The mitzvah of tefillin involves binding and subjugating the mind, heart, and hand to the directives of the passages contained within the tefillin, “Listen, Yisroel…Hashem is One,” “You shall love Hashem your G-d….” One’s love of Hashem is confirmed when he actually fulfills Hashem’s mitzvos practically, and most of all, when “You teach them to your children…” – when one educates his children to likewise begin and end their day with Kerias Shema etc. This, then, is the segulah of the mitzvah of tefillin: it helps a Jew to rule over and control the desires of the heart and the intellect of the mind.

[המשך] איתא בגמ' סיפור נפלא בנוגע לתשובת ה' למשה רבינו (שביקש "הראני נא את כבודך") "ויאמר לא תוכל לראות את פני" – "כך א"ל הקב"ה למשה כשרציתי לא רצית עכשיו שאתה רוצה איני רוצה". דבזה יש הוראה לעניננו: אמנם, כדי שלא יהי' "נהמא דכיסופא" רוצה ה' שליהודי יהי' חלק ו"שותפות" בברכות שמקבל מלמעלה כמו הברכה בבנים ובנות – אבל צריך לסמוך לגמרי על רצונו ית', השותף הג', שיודע מתי הזמן הטוב ביותר לזה, וכשמערבים בזה את רצון האישי, "כשרציתי – לא רצית", חסר אז ה"כלי" לברכת ה' ש"היא תעשיר" [ובודאי שגם אז ה' "מאריך אף", ובפרט שהכוונה בההתערבות היתה לטובה וכו']. ואין להתפעל מה"מלעיגים" וגם לא מה"שכנתה" – את ה"שכנתה" יש לנצל לקיים על ידה ציווי ה', כמ"ש בשיעור חומש היומי – כי כמאמינים בה' ה"זן ומפרנס לכל" "בחן ובחסד וברחמים", יודעים שאין לזה בסיס!

The Gemara states that when Moshe Rabbeinu asked Hashem, “Please show me Your glory,” “The Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moshe: When I wanted [to appoint you as My messenger] you did not want. And now that you want, I do not want,” and therefore “you will see My back, but My face will not be seen.” The lesson is that while it is true that Hashem wants a father and mother to have a share and a partnership in Hashem’s blessings for children (so that it won’t be “bread of shame”), nevertheless, they must rely completely on the will of Hashem – the third partner – Who knows the best time for the blessing to come. If they mix their personal feelings into the matter (“when I wanted, you did not want”), that detracts from the vessel for Hashem’s blessing. (Although Hashem is certainly “slow to anger” etc., especially because they have good intentions etc.) Nor should one be deterred by the “scoffers” or by “her neighbor” etc.; rather, the “neighbor” should be put to use to fulfill Hashem’s command, as described in today’s Chumash (“Every woman will request objects of silver and gold, and clothing, from her neighbor…and you will thus empty out Egypt”) – because one who believes that Hashem “nourishes and sustains all…with grace, kindness, and mercy” knows that there is no basis to their arguments.
