עמ"ש יעקב לעשו [כמ"ש בראשון דפ' וישלח] "עם לבן גרתי", מפרש"י "גרתי בגמטריא תרי"ג, כלומר, עם לבן הרשע גרתי ותרי"ג מצוות שמרתי וכו'". גם בהיות יעקב "גר" ב"גלות" ומוקף באנשי המקום שכולם היו נגדו, ולכאו' במצב כזה הי' צריך "להתפשר" ו"למכור" מצוה אחת כדי להרויח מצווה שני' – ומ"מ שמר את כל התרי"ג מצוות! ודוקא עי"ז התקיים בבית לבן. וההוראה: גם כאשר נמצאים בגלות, אין אף א' בעה"ב על התורה שיוכל "לסחור" אתה "ולמכור" מצווה א' כדי להרויח שלא יעברו עבירה וכו'! (זה ש"פיקוח נפש דוחה שבת" או "עשה דוחה לא-תעשה" וכיו"ב ה"ז גופא דין בתורה!). כדי להיות בטוח שייצאו מ"בית לבן" שלם בכל הענינים, בנפש וברכוש (שאפי' על ה"ממון" אין לוותר, כי זה "ממונם של ישראל", ובמילא יש בו את קדושת "גוי קדוש"), באופן של "מאד מאד", ה"ז דוקא כאשר גם ב"בית לבן" מקיימים את כל התרי"ג מצוות!

On the verse (in rishon of parashas Vayishlach), “I have been residing with Lavan…,” Rashi explains: “‘I have been residing (גרתי)’ has the same numerical value as 613 (תרי"ג), meaning: “I lived with the wicked Lavan but I kept the 613 mitzvos….” Even when Yaakov lived as a “ger” (stranger) in exile, surrounded by people who stood with Lavan against him, he did not compromise and try “selling out” one mitzvah in order to keep another, rather, he kept all 613 mitzvos, and therefore he was able to survive in Lavan’s house. The lesson is that even when one finds himself in exile, nobody has the right to “make deals” or to “sell” one mitzvah in exchange for not committing a transgression etc. (When the Torah says that saving a life overrides Shabbos or that a positive mitzvah overrides a negative mitzvah etc., it’s not some kind of a “deal”; rather, this is the ruling of Torah itself.) To ensure that one will emerge from Lavan’s house intact and with even his possessions intact (because a Jew has no right to forego his money, since it is the “money of the Jewish people,” the “holy nation,” and must be used for holiness), one must keep all 613 mitzvos even in the house of Lavan.

(1) In response to the blessing delivered on behalf of Anash to the Rebbe on the occasion of the Rebbe’s sixtieth wedding anniversary: May it be Hashem’s will that Hashem fulfill the promise, “Whoever blesses will be blessed,” with the blessing of Hashem, where “the bonus exceeds the principal.” Parashas Vayishlach begins, “Yaakov sent angels to his brother Esav….” For his part, Yaakov had already completed his birur, and he was ready for the Redemption, but it was delayed because Esav (and the world) was not yet ready for it. But today, when we have already “polished the buttons,” the world is surely ready for the Redemption, with everyone sending and summoning his own birurim and proceeding together to our Holy Land. A compilation of sichos on the topic of Chitas: (1) One of the takanos that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, strove to publicize everywhere was the study of Chitas every day – the weekly parashah with Rashi as divided according to the days of the week, the daily Tehillim as divided according to the days of the month, and the daily Tanya as the Rebbe divided according to the days of the year. (2) Although Chitas is not a new thing, by mentioning the takanah again, even those who already keep it will now do so with renewed vitality, and they will learn it as something new. (3) Every day’s Chitas contains a lesson relevant specifically to the service of that day. (4) The verse states, “They traveled; the dread (‘chitas’) of G-d was upon the cities…” – as the Rebbe emphasized, the study of Chitas helps and supports a Jew in many ways. (5) Through the study of Chitas we will travel to our Holy Land with the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu.
