א' הלימודים מחנוכה: למרות שילדי ישראל הם "מעטים" ו"חלשים" ביחס לילדי אוה"ע – ה"ז רק מצד הגוף, אבל לכל א' מהם יש נשמה שהיא "חלק אלוקה ממעל", שעל ידה הנה "מסרת גבורים ביד חלשים וכו'" – שלא רק שאין לאוה"ע השפעה על הנהגת הילד היהודי אלא אדרבה – הם לומדים ממנו איך להתנהג בצדק ויושר. וכמו שמתתיהו ובניו לא נבהלו מה"גבורים" וה"רבים" שרצו "להשכיחם תורתך ולהעבירם מחוקי רצונך" ויצאו ללחום נגדם, וכתבו על דגליהם "מכב"י – "מי כמכה בא-לים ה'", ובכח זה נצחום והיתה "תשועה גדולה". עתה אין נסיונות קשים כאלו אלא הנסיון לעמוד במס"נ נגד היצר שמנסה "להשכיחם תורתך" ולנצל את הזמן למשחקים וכיו"ב, ו"להעבירם מחוקי רצונך" כמו לא להקפיד כ"כ על כשרות. וה' מראה "נסיך" "נפלאותיך" ו"ישועתיך" ומנצחים את היצר.

One of the lessons from Chanukah is that although Jewish children may be “few” and “weak” compared to the gentile children of the world, that applies only to the body. But because every Jewish child possesses a soul that is “a portion of Hashem from above,” Hashem “delivers the mighty into the hands of the weak…” meaning, not only do the nations of the world have no influence over a Jewish child’s behavior, but on the contrary, they learn from the Jewish child how to behave with justice and integrity. Mattisyahu and his sons were not deterred by the “mighty” and the “many” who sought “to make them forget Your Torah and transgress the decrees of Your will,” and they went out to fight against them, holding banners inscribed with the word “Maccabi” (an acronym for “Who is like You among the mighty ones, Hashem”), and with that strength they were victorious and saw “great salvation.” Today, we no longer face such harsh tests. Instead, the challenge is to stand with mesiras nefesh against the yetzer hara who tries “to make them forget Your Torah” by getting them to waste time on games etc., and “to make them transgress the decrees of Your will” by not being so careful about kashrus etc. But they are shown “Your miracles,” “Your wonders,” and “Your salvations,” and they successfully defeat the yetzer hara.

מעלת נר ה' דחנוכה (אף שיש אומרים שזה קשור עם גאולת אדה"ז ממאסרו השני בשנת תקס"א, אבל עפ"י הכלל ש"מגלגלין זכות ליום זכאי" מוכרח לומר שישנה מעלה ביום זה מצ"ע): ענינם של נרות חנוכה הוא להאיר על ידם את חושך העולם (כנ"ל), ומובן שעיקר החידוש בזה הוא בימי החול של חנוכה ולא ביום השבת (וכמ"ש במדרש הטעם למה לא נאמר בשבת "ויהי ערב ויהי בוקר" כי בשבת "אין חושך"!). וזוהי מעלתו של נר ה' דחנוכה, כי זהו יום היחיד בחנוכה שאי אפשר לחול בשבת! ואין בו ענין של "שבת" אפי' "בכח" (משא"כ שאר ימי החנוכה שיכולים לחול בשבת יש להם ענין שבת "בכח" עכ"פ).

To explain the special quality of the fifth day of Chanukah and why among the days of Chanukah it is one of particular celebration (some explain that it is the day of the Alter Rebbe’s release from his second imprisonment in the year 5561 (1800), but based on the principle that “Merit is brought about on a meritorious day,” we must say that the day itself possesses a special quality): The purpose of the Chanukah candles is to illuminate the darkness of the world, and the main novelty here lies in the weekdays of Chanukah, not on Shabbos Chanukah (when there is no darkness, as the Midrash says: regarding Shabbos the verse doesn’t say “there was nightfall and there was morning,” because on Shabbos “there is no darkness”). And this is the unique quality of the fifth day of Chanukah: it is the only day of Chanukah that can never fall on Shabbos. It contains no aspect of Shabbos, even potentially (unlike the other days of Chanukah, which can fall on Shabbos and therefore have at least a potential connection to Shabbos).

החידוש של כנס זה – שמתכנסים בו זקנים וזקנות ביחד עם ילדים וילדות. המעלה בכנס כזה – הזדמנות לילדים לקיים מצות "מפני שיבה תקום", והזדמנות לזקנים להוסיף בחינוכם של הילדים מנסיונם שניתוסף במשך השנים, דלא כמו שהטיפשים אומרים שבגלל שהאדם מזדקן עליו להיות פחות פעיל – ההיפך הוא הנכון, וכמ"ש "ימים ידברו ורוב שנים יודיעו חכמה", וכההוראה מהדלקת נר חנוכה שבכל יום מוסיפים נר, וגם ענין זה מראים הם "דוגמא חי'" לילדים. השייכות דצירוף זקנים וילדים לחנוכה: טיהור בית-במקדש נעשה בהשגחת זקני וגדולי ישראל והכהנים, ונלחמו במסירות לבטל רצון היוונים "להשכיחם תורתך ולהעבירם מחוקי רצונך" ולהבטיח להמשיך לחנך את הילדים ללמוד "תורתך" ולקיים "חוקי רצונך"; הדגשת שייכות זו בענין החינוך (חנוכה מלשון חינוך) – "חנוך לנער גו' גם כי יזקין גו'", וגם החינוך הוא ע"י הזקנים.

The novelty of this gathering is that the elderly are assembled together with the children. This provides an opportunity for the children to fulfill the mitzvah of “rising before an elderly person…,” and for the elderly to contribute to the children’s education based on the experience they have gained over the years. While some foolish people say that a person should become less active as they age, the opposite is true, as it is written, “Days speak, and many years impart wisdom,” and as we learn from lighting the Chanukah candles, where we add another candle every day (and regarding this, too, the elderly serve as a living example for the children). The relation between the joining of the elderly and the children, and the Yom Tov of Chanukah: (1) The purification of the Beis Hamikdash took place under the guidance of the elders and leaders of the Jewish people along with the kohanim, and they fought with mesiras-nefesh to annul the attempt of the Yevanim “to make them forget Your Torah and remove them from the decrees of Your will,” and they ensured that the Jewish education of children would continue. (2) The name “Chanukah” is related to the word “chinuch” (education). With respect to education, (a) the elderly teach the young, and (b) education starts when one is young, but continues his entire life, as the verse says, “Educate the child… even when he grows old…”.
