כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר סיפר פעם אודות המאורע שאירע בי"ב תמוז ה'תרנ"ה ב"אוהל" בליובאוויטש, כשהלך לשם עם אביו, כ"ק אדמו"ר (מהורש"ב) נ"ע: כשהגיעו לשם, פתח אביו את ארון הקודש וחזר על חצי הא' של אגה"ק "חגרה בעוז מתני'". לאח"ז אמר לו שבפני אבותיו הק' ה"ה "כורת ברית" אתו ומוסר לידיו את ההנהלה של עסקנות ציבורית בגו"ר, ומביא אותו ל"עקידה", והרי בענין ה"עקידה" צ"ל עוקד ונעקד כדי שיהי' כפי הרצוי. התחלת העבודה צ"ל ב"מתנים" (קבלת עול). וצריך ל"חגרם" ב"עוז" – מסירות נפש! ומהו מס"נ – "אַזוי און נישט אַנדערש!". וזהו ענין ה"עקידה" [וסיים האגה"ק]. זה שכ"ק מו"ח סיפר לנו אודות פרטי המאורע של ההכנה דכניסה שלו לעסקנות ציבורית, הוא כדי להורות שכדי שהעבודה דהפצת היהדות והמעיינות שלנו, שנמסרה לנו ע"י רבותינו נשיאנו, תהי' כפי הרצוי וכפי הרצון, ה"ז דוקא ע"י ההכנה דמס"נ ש"אַזוי און נישט אַנדערש"! וכמו המס"נ של אאע"ה שלא הי' באופן ש"חיפש" מס"נ אלא ידע שעליו לפרסם אלקות בעולם באופן של אַזוי און נישט אַנדערש" ובמילא לא משנה אם בדרך יש נסיון של אור כשדים וכיו"ב.

My father-in-law the Rebbe related that on Yud Beis Tammuz 5655 (1895), his father took him to the Ohel in Lubavitch. When they arrived, his father opened the aron kodesh and read the first half of the Iggeres HaKodesh beginning, “She girds her loins with might.” Afterwards, the Rebbe (Rashab) Nishmaso Eden told my father-in-law that in the presence of his holy forebears, he was entering into a covenant with him and entrusting him with the leadership of communal matters both physical and spiritual; he explained that was hereby bringing him to an “Akeidah,” and that in an Akeidah, there must be both one who binds and one who is bound, in order for the sacrifice to be as it should be. The work must begin with the “loins” (kabbolas ol), which must be “girded” with “might” (mesiras-nefesh). And what is mesiras-nefesh? The conviction that it must be this way and no other; this was the Akeidah. (He then finished reading the Iggeres HaKodesh.) The fact that my father-in-law the Rebbe told us the details of this event that marked the preparation for his entry into work on behalf of the public is to teach us that for us to properly carry out the mission entrusted to us by the Rebbeim – our work of spreading Yiddishkeit and spreading the wellsprings of Chassidus – it must be done specifically through the preparation of mesiras-nefesh and the conviction that it must be this way and no other. It must be like the mesiras-nefesh of Avraham Avinu: Avraham didn’t seek out mesiras-nefesh; rather, he was focused on his mission of publicizing G-dliness in the world. And since he had the conviction that it must be done this way and no other, therefore, he was undeterred even when he encountered trials like the furnace in Ur Kasdim etc.

במזמור ע"ח שבתהילים מצינו דבר פלא לכאו': התחלת המזמור (שמורה על תכליתו) הוא "האזינה עמי תורתי", וכמ"ש בהמשך המזמור גודל ההכרח בלימוד התורה ובקיום המצוות "ויקם עדות ביעקב ותורה שם בישראל" וכו', אבל בהמשך המזמור מקשר כ"ז בסיפור באריכות ובפרטיות אודות "נפלאותיו אשר עשה" בארץ מצרים, והמכות וכו'! עד שכו"כ ענינים שאומרים בהגדה בליל הסדר לומדים מפסוקים אלו שבמזמור זה. ובזה מודגש אפי' בתושב"כ גודל הענין דסיפור נפלאות יצ"מ, ע"י אמירת מזמור תהלים זה, עד שזהו "יסוד ועמוד חזק בתורתנו ובאמונתנו", שבזה קשור כל ענין שבתורה – "ויקם עדות ביעקב וגו'", ועד שבזה תלוי' הגאולה האמיתית והשלימה! כמ"ש בהמשך המזמור. ומזה עידוד לקיום הוראת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בנוגע לאמירת תהילים בכלל, וגודל הענין דאמירת תהלים ע"י היהודים הפשוטים, ה"תהילים אידן", או ע"י כו"כ מנשי ישראל המצטיינות באמירת תהילים (ודוד המלך ביקש ופעל שאמירת תהילים תפעל אותו דבר מה שנפעל ע"י לימוד נגעים ואהלות).

We find a seemingly wondrous thing in chapter 78 of Tehillim: The beginning of the chapter (which indicates its underlying theme and purpose) states, “Listen, my people, to my Torah,” and in that vein it goes on to discuss the importance of studying Torah and keeping mitzvos, “He established a testimony in Yaakov and He set down a Torah in Yisroel” etc. But then it ties this to a detailed account of “His wonders which He performed” in the land of Egypt, such that many passages in the Haggadah are derived from the verses in this chapter of Tehillim. Thus, even in the Written Torah we find an emphasis on the importance of telling the story of the wonders of the Exodus from Egypt, which is “a foundation and strong pillar in our Torah and of our faith,” which even the Redemption depends on, as it says later in the chapter. This also encourages us to fulfill the directive of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, about saying of Tehillim in general, and the significance of the Tehillim recited by the “Tehillim Yidden” and by Jewish women etc. (and Dovid HaMelech requested and brought about that saying Tehillim should have the same effect as studying even the deepest parts of Torah).

עבודת אברהם אבינו היתה מתוך אהבה, והראי' ע"ז מביאה הגמ' ממ"ש "זרע אברהם אוהבי". וביאר אדמו"ר האמצעי בצעירותו הטעם שהלימוד הוא דוקא ממ"ש ביחס ל"זרע אברהם" ולא מאברהם עצמו, כי מכיון שהקב"ה בעצמו דיבר עם אברהם וכו' אין פלא שהיתה אצלו ענין האהבה, אבל כשגם "זרע אברהם" הם "אוהבי" זוהי הראי' שענין האהבה אצל אברהם הי' מצד תכונת נפשו מצ"ע. ואע"פ שמבין ה"זרע אברהם" היו דורות שההנהגה בהם היתה בא' משאר המדות כמו "פחד יצחק", אבל גם אצלם זה בא מצד מדת החסד וכו'. וכמו שאצל אברהם, הנה גם היראה שלו ("עתה ידעתי כי ירא אלקים עתה") היתה מצד האהבה, ועד"ז הוא גם אצל ה"זרע" שלו, שגם אם לפעמים צ"ל ההנהגה הגלוי' עם השני לא בקו החסד אבל זה צ"ל מצד האהבה אליו, וכל זמן שהוא לא בטוח שזהו מצד האהבה אלא מצד איזה פני' ‏–‏ ימנע מזה!

Avraham Avinu’s service of Hashem embodied the trait of love, as the Gemara derives from the verse, “the descendants of Avraham who loved Me.” When the Mitteler Rebbe was a child, he explained why the proof comes specifically from a verse about “the descendants of Avraham” and not from Avraham himself: the fact that Avraham Avinu served Hashem with love does not prove that Avraham’s very nature was love, because anyone spoken to directly by Hashem would serve Hashem with love. But the fact that even “the descendants of Avraham” are called those “who love Me” proves that Avraham’s love was rooted in the very nature of his soul. While it is true that “the descendants of Avraham” included generations whose conduct embodied attributes other than love, such “the Fear of Yitzchok,” nevertheless, even then, the fear etc. stemmed from the attribute of kindness. Just as even Avraham’s fear (“Now I know that you are G-d-fearing”) was rooted in love, the same must be true of his descendants: even if at times one must treat another person with what seems to be the opposite of kindness, it must be rooted in his love for that person. As long as one is not certain that this action stems from love and not some other motive, he should refrain from it.
