The sound hits Guy in some low, forgotten part of his psyche - a part of him that understands the truth about shadows. The part of him that knows the deep, dark truth behind fairy stories and myths.

Guy is about to finish writing his breakthrough online article. He overheard the story by chance in a pub and it’s guaranteed to go viral - all he needs to do is persuade the World’s Unluckiest Man to talk to him. His best friend Larry’s quest for killer clickbait material has led him to a recently appeared shanty town in Glasgow, where he finds some kind of urban voodoo cult. Ex-cop Sam has already come face-to-face with the terrifying force behind both these phenomena, but he’s been trying to put it out of his mind.

When Larry is killed in inexplicably gruesome circumstances, Guy knows he’s also a target. The evidence of malevolent power is suddenly proliferating - but why now? Together, Sam and Guy enter a shadow world of ancient monsters and modern curses, in a battle to figure out the rules of the game and bring them to the light before it’s far too late.

From the best-selling author of the Stone Man series, You See the Monster is for fans of contemporary horror books at their most darkly inventive: a chilling, high-concept fable for our times.

Intriguing. I'm going to read more from this author. This is one you listen to in the daytime, and not before you go to bed at night.

I read a couple of really positive reviews which convinced me, like the first reviewer I read, to risk a precious credit on an unknown author who is narrating his own novel. (groan)
It was so worth it.
First let me say that Horror is not my favorite genre anymore, although it has been in the past. I lean towards either “literary fiction” ie; classics especially late 19th century, and all kinds of modern fiction. All I knew beforehand was that it has something to do with rules, and that it had been an absorbing listen for a reviewer who seemed reliable.
As with that review, I don’t want to give anything away about the actual story, so let me address the reasons why I might not have taken the risk. First, that it’s narrated by its author. Sometimes this means it’s really going to suck, because a good narrator is a rare and special thing. It’s an acting skill. And it’s not everyone’s thing. Within minutes I’d completely forgotten that it wasn’t a “professional voice actor” reading it, and for what it’s worth, Mr. Smitherd can honestly add that to his resume; although I don’t think a second job is going to be necessary. This was really good. It wasn’t too gruesome, or bloody. It wasn’t triggering or painful to read. It was very suspenseful though, and it has an element of puzzle that keeps you wondering.
Second, because I’ve never heard of the author. It’s not his first novel though, and I’m excited to check out The Stone Man.
In the end, it’s always fun to find a new writer. I was drawn in and totally absorbed, which is what I want when I choose an audiobook. I’ll be turning this one over and over in my mind, and possibly listening to it again. And I will definitely be checking out his other books.

So glad I took a chance!

I'm going to be honest, when I saw the cover picture, I thought this book look really stupid. But, I listened to the sample, liked Mr. Smitherd's accent so, I gave it a shot. I'm happy I did because now, I've found my next binge-worthy author.

I loved this book for several reasons. First, it turned out to be my favorite genre, supernatural horror. Second, it was mysterious enough, I wasn't sure how it would end which kept my attention. Third, the main character, Guy, is simultaneously a shit and sweet so, I really loved him. Finally, the premise actually scared me, which is hard to do. I will NOT be accepting any ugly trinkets left on my doorstep anytime soon. Well done, sir.
