Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Two centuries after the Confederation staved off an invasion by the robotic Locusts, Captain Jack Romanoff faces mandatory retirement from an ever-shrinking navy. Actions speak louder than words. The Confederation doesn’t think the Locusts are coming back.

But what if the politicians are wrong?

Snared in a scheme he doesn’t fully understand or trust, Jack gets his promotion, but it comes with a catch. With a crew of rejects, he must restore the most powerful warship humanity has ever built, after centuries of neglect and decay, before time runs out.

If he fails, humanity might not need to worry about history repeating itself ever again.

This isn’t the first book I’ve listened to that dealt with a battleship that had become a museum, but I enjoyed this story more! It’s highly entertaining military sci-fi! The corruption and power plays hit a bit too close to home, and I hope to see justice served in this series. But more importantly, I am anxious to see what Commodore Romanoff can accomplish with his unconventional crew and a bunch of civilians, while facing more than one formidable foe and commanding a ship that’s seen its share of battle and might or might not be up to what lies ahead!

Can’t wait for the next book!!

In the first 30 minutes I did not thinkI would like it. The narrator’s range of characters seems to be EXTREMELY limited. However, after a few more minutes, the story took over and I got used to the voice(s). After listening to the entire book, the narrator kind of sounded like a cool detective, or Batman 😅.
Looking forward in continuing the series.

Surprisingly good..

Misfits brought together to do a thankless job, and the narrator is channeling Jack Webb. A fun story.

An irreverent story

As a vet of backyard starship, this book is familiar and comfortable in style and tone. A little less cheeky, but story beat\pacing, character focus and motivations are all very similar. Jeffrey Kafer, also of Backyard Starship audio is such a unique performer and I enjoy his style... with the exception of a few choice accents that he attempted this time around, I THINK he is trying to pull off an australian accent, but oof its hard to listen too. I'm a few books into this series, but this falls into the category of the protagonist who is amazing at everything and never loses, a Jack Reacher type. Personally I go through phases where I need this archetype, it's fun and you know your going to root for the good guy and he's going to win. This cuts both ways though and sometimes it's a bit grating, he's so accidently amazing and perfect and everyone is so buffudled. The tech descriptions building and MacGuffins are all solid, a bit boilerplate, but satisfactory to place you in the world. The concept of the Hunter is neat and I got a kick imagining it. I gave this 4 stars overall, but my sense of comfort and familiarity with the style, author and narrator certainly color my opinion and would probably put this at a 3 star for a new listener. THAT all being said, I'm still getting the next book, and the next book, and the next.

Great simple sci-fi with some consideration

Great start to a new series. Chaney never disappoints. He releases so many great books that I haven't read anyone else in months. Keep up the great work!
