Publisher's summary

Michael Freeman is a disabled veteran who had just been fired from his mind-numbing cubicle job, which allowed his opportunistic girlfriend to dump him. Now, he only wants to spend some time at his grandfather's mountain cabin so he can unwind, away from the drudgery of daily life and with a cold beer in his hands.

Standing in his way is an ancient spaceship with an emotional AI, nanites that have invaded his body, an international crime syndicate, a suicidal FBI agent on a vigilante mission, terrorists . . . and that's just the beginning.

What can one man do when faced with insurmountable odds? Call it quits? Or . . . call some of his old army buddies and blow those obstacles to smithereens?

Can he become more than he had ever dreamed, reaching further than any man before? Staying under the radar of the powers that be while righting a few wrongs of the modern world.

He is sure of three things: 1. He really doesn't want to follow the rules anymore . . . aside from his own; 2. Space is the ultimate frontier, and he had been given a turnkey technology to reach it—if they let him; and 3. Those that want to hurt him and the people he cares about will rue the day they were born.

Refreshingly clean action filled story

I’m on the road a lot and I listen to a lot of books. Many of them are filled with needless vulgarity and gore. This book is a story about different stories (lives) of people coming together with a grand purpose of saving humanity and taking out some vile human trash along the way. I truly enjoyed this story.

Sorta mediocre

Kinda plodding from one topic to the next. Kept falling asleep then when awake nothing had changed

3.5 stars

I enjoyed the overall story, but not the constant preaching by the main character.

The “twist” at the end was predicted early on in the story.

The whole book basically boils down to “how I would fix the world if I had unlimited power and resources.” Also, how the rest of the world will try to stop me because they will be jealous of me.

Still, I like reading stories about people stumbling into unimaginable power. Even when they get a bit pompous and full of themselves as a result. Lol

Good story so far

I follow alot of similar story line in other books but it is ok and of course JPC was a great narrator choice.

In awesome hidden find

With over 400 audiobooks in my collection it is getting really hard to find books that are overwhelming and captivating.
However, this is a really fun book and I intend on following the series.

Fun, but with issues!

The story has been done before, but this is still a fun listen. The narrator does a very good job, and I enjoyed the time spent immersed in the story.

My biggest issue with this book is that, after the first chapter, I would be pulled out of that immersion by a bad habit the author developed. The constant conversion of length or weight or any other form of measurement. Even in the dialogue a character would say "He was about 6 feet, 182 centimeters, and about 220 lbs, 100 kilograms"

NO ONE DOES THAT. NO ONE ever says BOTH formats in a normal conversation. PICK ONE and stick with it. I may not be 100% in tune with the metric system, but I can fake it enough to enjoy the book. The constant conversion after every single measurement got annoying very very quickly.

Great start of a new "what if?" series

Loved the story. Clear separation between good and evil, which is what I could use right now
