Do you have a toxic family member? Do you feel like cutting ties with this person—even as painful and scary as that may sound—would dramatically increase your well-being and improve your life? You're not alone. Severing ties with a family member can be devastating, and cutting this toxic person out of your life may bring up feelings of guilt and uncertainty. Fortunately, you can free yourself from this toxic family member in a healthy, responsible, and liberating way.

In Adult Survivors of Toxic Family Members, psychologist and toxic family survivor Sherrie Campbell offers effective strategies for setting strong boundaries after ending contact with a toxic family member, and provides powerful tools to help you heal from shame, self-doubt, and stigma. You'll find the validation you need to embrace your decision with pride and acknowledgement of your self-worth. You'll learn how to let go of negative thoughts and feelings. And finally, you'll develop the skills needed to rediscover self-care, self-love, self-reliance, and healthy loving relationships.

Whether you're ready to sever ties with a toxic family member, or already have, this book will help guide you, every step of the way.

Dr. Sherrie Campbell spoke clearly and compassionately throughout the entire book. I found myself being completely heard by someone I just "met". Her ability to provide actionable steps that enable me to be on the journey of healing is something I value immensely! I often said, this is hard to get through because it is so true. As I continued to listen, it's as if the next chapter spotlighted what I was feeling or thinking about. This book is about a topic most keep a secret, however it is a VERY real thing! I love this book!

I was also fortunate enough to have a supportive spouse who also read the book with me to help bring understanding to my trauma and also be a supportive backbone to my journey of healing!

I've read/ heard 100s of books in my lifetime, this one is the one which I believe has made the deepest impact on my life!

Thank you Dr. Sherrie Campbell!

An Essential and Beautiful Read

This book is amazing! I have the paper version as well, as I found I had soooo many notes & areas to highlight that it was necessary for me. The first time I cried during this book, and there were many, was because it felt like I was reading my own story right there on the page. I don’t know anyone with my similar experience, or at least no one willing to speak about it, so it was crucial for me to know that I was not alone. I had already begun a process of separation from several members of my family who had been emotionally & verbally abusive to me for either my entire life or theirs. I will not be scapegoated for their complete lack of empathy & their refusal to ever examine or take responsibility for their toxic behavior, manipulation & hurtful words & acts. I feel so free & empowered! I will always be healing from these very, very deep wounds, but I now feel more assured that what I’m doing is just really the first step in putting myself first. I matter. My feelings matter. There is nothing wrong with me. I have normal emotional responses to abusive behavior. It’s taken me 40 years to find the strength, but that’s where I’m at and that’s okay. As Dr. Campbell says, “forward is a direction” & that’s how I’m moving. The people I take with me are the ones who deserve to be there, not the people who can never take accountability for anything; not the people who have made pain, manipulation, control & intentional hurt their life’s work. I’ve finally found permission to be myself and through Dr. Campbell’s work I have even learned more about myself, including insights into my own behavior, which will really help me in my healing. I wish things could have been different with my family, but then I wouldn’t be who I am. Thank you for writing this book! I am grateful.
