In time for Scorsese’s 80th birthday and the release of Killers of the Flower Moon, a new edition of the seminal oral history tracing Scorsese’s journey from young filmmaker to legend, featuring a foreword by Steven Spielberg

Few filmmakers, if any, make the kind of impact that Martin Scorsese has made on American cinema. The winner of every prestigious film award, including the Oscar, Scorsese is a living legend. Bestselling author and award-winning filmmaker Mary Pat Kelly’s groundbreaking biography reveals how this working-class boy from Manhattan’s Little Italy became one of our most acclaimed, celebrated, and influential filmmakers.

Martin Scorsese: A Journey maps Scorsese’s personal and artistic evolution though his films, from early works like student films and Mean Streets through cinematic masterpieces like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull,The King of Comedy,Goodfellas. Across interviews with Scorsese himself; stars like Robert De Niro, Paul Newman, Liza Minelli, and Nick Nolte; colleagues including screenwriters and cinematographers; as well as family and friends, it reveals the story of a man in a way that only his community and fellow artists can, giving us unprecedented, intimate access to the making of these iconic films and the extraordinary mind behind them. Brimming with insight into Scorsese’s life, values, process, humor, and inspirations, it is a remarkable account of America’s premiere director, the shepherd of countless imaginations.

I enjoyed this book. Lots of interviews with Scorsese and those that have worked with him. The book only goes up to Cape Fear because it was originally written in 1991, which would be a good thing for Audible to mention. So it only covers films from Martin's NYU days up through the early 90s. But it still takes you through movies like Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, After Hours, Goodfellas and all the others of that twenty-plus year era. There's some added features at the beginning and end of the book that are more current. But primarily, it's a good behind the scenes look at the making of some of Scorsese's most iconic films.

Good behind the scenes of early Scorsese films

Really enjoyed this. It consists of a number of interviews, starting with his parents and then actors, editors, classmates, producers, etc. who have all worked with Martin. It ends with Cape Fear, but the beginning does mention Killers of the Flower Moon, but doesn’t go into too much detail. The biggest chapters are dedicated to Last Temptation of Christ and Raging Bull. There’s a lot to info about how the films got made, but also why Martin made them and the personal connection he had to them. He really has a passion for filmmaking and storytelling.

Also enjoyed the performance of the narrator, she really made it engaging.

Great and insightful biography

I was disappointed listening to this book. The story was repetitive. I fell asleep listening to it several times. Not worth the credit I spent on it.

Disappointment
