    My guest today is Sophia Hembeck. Sophia is a German born writer, visual artist and publisher, now located in Edinburgh. She studied playwriting at the University of Arts in Berlin, and also Performance Art and Scenic Writing. Sophia worked as a celebrated theatre director, created Graphic Novels and a successful Podcast, that was taken on by Audible. Through her own publishing house "Muser Letter Publishing", she released her two poetic memoirs “Things I Have Noticed” and “Things I Have Loved” and is currently working on the third book, to complete the Trilogy. Her Newsletter "The Muse Letter“ became a Substack-Bestseller in 2023. She also offers essay writing classes, both in German and English. What strikes me most is, how Sophia took her writing career in her own hands. She didn’t wait for some publisher to allow her to become visible, but gave herself the permission, to share her art with the world. Her unapologetic self-empowerment is an example for others, to do the same. We talk about leaving your home-country and what it means, to build your career from the scratch as an artist. Sophia explains, how her now impressive success, was a step by step process – and a slow one, too. We discuss rejection letters, breakups and Tarot reading. Sophia gives ideas on how to start validating yourself – and how outside validation might come later. She describes her weekly routines, gives insight on her book writing process and explains, why writing the truth comes before all other tools.

    Mein heutiger Gast ist der Dirigent Kevin John Edusei. Geboren und aufgewachsen in Bielefeld entdeckte Kevin schon früh seine Liebe zur Musik – nicht nur, aber auch der klassischen. Er studierte Tonmeister, klassisches Schlagzeug und Dirigieren an der Universität der Künste in Berlin, sowie der Königlichen Musikhochschule in Den Haag. Er gewann hochrangige Preise und Wettbewerbe, erhielt namenhafte Förderungen und Stipendien, und wurde schließlich 1. Kapellmeister und stellvertretenden Generalmusikdirektor an den Theatern Bielefeld und Augsburg. Spätestens nach seinem ersten Preis beim „Dimitris Mitropoulos Dirigentenwettbewerb“ erhielt er zunehmend auch internationale Einladungen als Gastdirigent. Kevin John Edusei war über 8 Saisons Chefdirigent der Münchner Symphoniker und am Konzert Theater Bern. Heute gastiert er an großen Häusern wie der Royal Albert Hall und dirigiert Orchester in der ganzen Welt. Kevin gilt als Shootingstar der jüngeren Dirigenten-Generation. Sein Stil wird als klar, progressiv und facettenreich beschrieben. Er setzt sich ein für ein vielfältiges Repertoire von Barock bis Moderne und möchte ein Weichensteller sein. In erster Linie, was die Musik betrifft – aber auch in Bezug auf ein diverseres Bild von Orchestermusiker*innen und Dirigent*innen. Sehr deutlich benennt er rassistische Tendenzen und Ausgrenzung im klassischen Musikbetrieb und setzt sich ein für ein offenes Miteinander. Wir sprechen über seinen Werdegang und die Rolle, die seine Großmutter in seiner Kindheit und Jugend gespielt hat. Kevin erzählt von der frühen und großen Liebe zur Musik und was die Töpfe in seinem Elternhaus damit zu tun haben. Er erzählt von seiner Zeit als Kapellmeister, davon, was es bedeutet, als junger Dirigent einem etablierten Orchester vorzustehen und wie er seine Rolle interpretiert. Es geht um Erfolg und Scheitern, um Tradition und Moderne und das menschliche Miteinander. Wir sprechen auch über Rassismus-Erfahrungen und Diversität. Kevin beschreibt, wie er immer wieder erklären muss, weshalb er lieber den Freischütz dirigieren will, als Porgy und Bess und was es mit ihm macht, nach einer gelungenen Aufführung Kritiken zu lesen, die mit seiner Hautfarbe beginnen. Es geht darum, wie sein Beruf sich mit einem Familienleben verbinden lässt, was daran schwierig ist und wie es sich anfühlt, in Portland zu sitzen, während seine fünfjährige Tochter sich zuhause nach ihm sehnt. Unser Gespräch ist ein schöner Fluss entlang der Musik und ich hoffe, ihr werdet ihm ebenso gerne lauschen, wie ich.

There’s no need to flee or neglect: It is all part of the divine! You will hear, that we recorded this interview some months ago, when spring was just rising. For different reasons, it took me a while to release it, but as summer is now drawing back and we get ready for a new cycle, I find it astonishingly perfect. We speak about nature and the wisdom, the earth provides. Chameli talks about her realization that the wars on the outside were a mirror for the destructive patterns in herself. An issue that sadly is more than relevant in these times. The healing of the wound of separation became Chameli’s north star she from then on followed. She describes how this decision opened a thousand doors for her and lead her to new ways of understanding the world – and herself. Chameli shares her approach for decoding ancient mythological keys and how changing the perspective on a story might shift the whole message. The insights she shares here are dear to my heart, and I hope you’ll listen with attention and an open mind and heart.
