In a world full to bursting with would-be heroes, Jim couldn't be less interested in saving the day. His fireballs fizzle. He's awfully grumpy. Plus, he's been dead for about sixty years. When a renegade necromancer wrenches him from eternal slumber and into a world gone terribly, bizarrely wrong, all Jim wants is to find a way to die properly, once and for all.

On his side, he's got a few shambling corpses, an inept thief, and a powerful death wish. But he's up against tough odds: angry mobs of adventurers, a body falling apart at the seams—and a team of programmers racing a deadline to hammer out the last few bugs in their AI.

*Mogworld is the debut novel from video-game icon Yahtzee Croshaw (Zero Punctuation)!

Being familiar with Yahtzee's web series might make me biased, but the experience of listening to this book, narrated by Yahtzee himself no less, was a delight despite the flaws that would usually detect from the story.

The most notable thing was his performance. It was far from professional, but not in a bad way. The recording was lightly edited and there were often background noises (shifting his position, taking a breath, etc...), but it wasn't a bad thing. Maybe it was intentional, maybe it wasn't, but it gave the impression of a harried narrator tiredly narrating the adventure of a harried character tiredly making his way through his adventure, and it somehow just worked. Again, I may be biased because of my prior experience with his web series, but the whole thing caused me to view the entirety of the events in my head as though it were animated in the form of one of his Zero Punctuation videos.

As for the character acting itself, top notch. each character, from the zealously confused Thaddeus to the cheery and bubbly Meryl, were a delight. Personal favorite was Barry. His manner of speaking was a riot every time he made an appearance, and I found myself looking forward to hearing from him again and again.

The story itself was interesting as well, with the take on MMO-style gameplay from a different perspective, and the meta-interactions were not expected, but also not unwelcome. Jim also manages to stumble his way through the plot and evolve as a character in a believable way, and the same goes for Meryl and Thaddeus as well.

All in all, a hilarious journey of a zombie that wants nothing more than to just die for good, and a few other things happen as well along the way.

9 out of ten, would join Jim on his existential adventures again.

Existential crisis turned comedy

I listened to both DEDA files books first and loved them. This being his first book, I believe, Yahtzee definitely gets much better at narration which helps the whole experience.

Croshaw’s debut novel is a hilarious romp that is as dark and cynical as it is deep and philosophical.

Hilarious Satire and Rather Deep
