Where is the setup?

Is there a series before this that explains the people and the magic system? I feel like I was dropped in the middle of the story.

Great if length didn't cause Sync to fail

I struggled to get thru to book 8 finding my place in the book and re-listening to large portions multiple times due to consistently and repeated failure of the book to sync. It would default to the beginning of the book and this is 108hrs. Doing this for an 8-10 hour book might be acceptable but nearly everytime I pause or set down the book at all it failing to come off pause or playing at all due to the lack of sync. I don't know if the 13 volumes is just too much for the app but unless you watch your chapters really close be prepared to have to re-listen to many many parts multiple times in this enormous 13 volume set. Might come back to it at some time and try to finish it but level of frustration with the app failing to maintain the location in the book has made it unreadable/listenable. The author and performer are not at fault here. This is purely the production service of audible failing to maintain location, but when that is THE key feature after size and cost of library, it makes this one book unreadable. Hope this helps someone else avoid the disappointment I feel in not being able to re-listen to another chapter for some time after the 10's already experienced in this one book.

Fun and epic world. Magic system is complex and interesting and the story is massive. A bit overly fast paced for some character development but generally good sci Fi fantasy.
