Moms Off The Record

By: April West & Katherine Sigblad
  • Summary

  • Tired of outdated and conventional motherhood advice? Are you anti- (insert "Big" + industry name) exploiting the mother-baby dyad for financial gain? Do you prefer to think critically about practices and philosophies across the pregnancy to motherhood spectrum? If you said "yes" to any of the above questions, then you're going to fit right in. Don't worry— this is not another "mainstream mama" podcast.

Whether you are a soon-to-be mom or a seasoned mom who has "seen it all," April and Kat promise to never shy away from topics that are far too controversial to discuss at the local playground with the "normie" moms or with your child's pediatrician. These topics should not be controversial at all, but sadly in our highly-censored society, almost anything can be interpreted as such.

We're so glad you discovered us! Join us every other Friday as we step outside of our comfort zones, say what many of you are thinking but too afraid to admit out loud, and examine mainstream mom narratives through a funny and honest lens. We may just even change your mind about deeply held beliefs if you're open to it!

  • #35: Thriving As a Single, Homeschooling Mom with Postpartum Doula Oni of Butterfly Birthcare
    May 3 2024
Oni, an Atlanta-based postpartum doula and single, homeschooling mom to two daughters aged eight and ten reveals her methods for making her non-traditional lifestyle work for her rather than against her. We loved the gentle wisdom and powerful reminders woven into this interview and we hope they resonate just as much with you.

We delve into concepts such as:
    • the importance of veering away from the martyrdom mindset in motherhood
    • Oni's abandonment of the feminist movement and her calling to homeschool her two girls
    • how single motherhood does not have to pose a barrier to homeschooling and/or your career
    • how we women need to lean on our local community in person, not just online, for holistic support
    • the delicate balance of setting boundaries and showing up as her authentic self as a postpartum doula while also staying open-minded to clients' varying needs
    • the debacle of the night shift as a postpartum doula— does it help or hinder the breastfeeding relationship within the mother-baby dyad?
    • how we don't have to and should not try to be everything to everyone when serving clients in our business
    • how to know when it's the right time to take an overnight trip without your little one

  • #34: Kat is Pregnant With Baby #2!
    Apr 19 2024

The (K)at is finally out of the bag! Kat is expecting baby #2!! It would be a little weird if we withheld the most compelling aspects of this wild pregnancy and plans for a sovereign birth (we explain what that means too) as two moms who host a podcast dedicated to pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. So, we of course had to divulge the details. It's too exciting not to share! We answer some of our listener questions submitted via instagram stories as well.

  • #33: Ancestral Living and Nourishing Our Families with Hilda Labrada Gore
    Apr 5 2024

Hilda Labradore Gore is the host and producer of Wise Traditions— the official Weston A. Price Foundation podcast.

Hilda brings her innate positivity, decades-long wisdom on ancestral practices, and exuberant demeanor to the virtual table where the three of us discuss topics such as:

    • How do we know which food movements du jour are truly right for us? Raw Milk and beef liver are all the rage now, but before that everyone was talking about Paleo, Keto, Pegan, Raw before 4pm and the list goes on.
    • Should we be concerned with the latest measles "outbreak"?
    • How can we embrace the "80/20" lifestyle with what we know about artificial food dyes, glyphosate, and other false foods that hijack our taste buds?
    • What are Hilda's favorite go-to simple, nutrient-dense snacks for young children and dinners for the entire family?
    • What is one simple way we can deepen our connection and strengthen our relationship with our children?
    • How we can nourish our families outside of diet?
    • Food fads that will not age will such as the normalization of seed oils and lab-grown meat!

We absolutely loved our conversation with Hilda! As her IG handle suggests, she has a completely holistic perspective on caring for ourselves and our families, and her warmth beams during this interview. We hope you gleaned as much inspiration and wisdom from this upbeat and enlightening conversation as we did.
