Violet: Nothing wrecks an already bad day faster than almost getting hit by a car. But then he rescued me. My mysterious, sexy savior wore danger as easily as he wore his black-on-black clothes. And still, I wasn't afraid of him.

I should've been.

Because after one misunderstanding, the man I thought would love me forever showed me just how ruthless and cold he really is. I trusted him with my heart once and it broke me. I can't afford to make that mistake again . . .

Hoka: She was my ikigai—my life purpose. Loving her was inevitable.

But I'm king of the Japanese mafia. Softness like hers doesn't exist in my world. Maybe that's why it was so easy for me to believe she betrayed me. Why I burned us to the ground.

Now that I know the truth, I'll do anything to get her back. I know a good man would let her go. But I'm not a good man . . .

Contains mature themes.

Gosh, this had heart and was so hard to read at some points. These characters and the plot twists are worth investing in. They are all so incredibly flawed but believable and relatable in their own ways. The narration is lovely. Though I wish it were a duet audio, having each narrator switch-off was still ok. I also enjoyed the pronunciation, accents, and Japanese sentiments, mythologies, and colloquialisms.
Amazing story that shows just how deep generational trauma can run, and how running away from our parent’s mistakes will only get us so far—most likely, it will turn our lives full circle until we either break generational curses or fall victim to them ourselves.

Violet, our MFC, had such a gorgeous character arc. I’m so happy she rose from the ashes multiple times. Her suicide contemplation was so real, and Hoka’s mother’s timely wisdom carried necessary weight. The parishes parents and their imagined words to their children rhymes in a poetic, powerful way that juxtaposed both main characters. The best friend meant so well and yet was so misguided, it made me ache for him even through bitter resentment, which is how I imagined Hoka felt. This was beautiful.

Beautifully written

I couldn’t stop listening to this awesome book! I typically am more of a darker romance fan but, this one (while not very dark) still had a nice variety of love, heartbreak, betrayal, spice, redemption, and mafia world. The narrators were both new to me but I enjoyed both their performances!

This story had it all!

The story was well-written and had angst, passion, and a good plot. I hope the whole series has audio versions.

Excellent narrators

It would have been a great story but ughh. The guy sounded like the biggest puss ever. Then he puts a gun to her head? Nah bro nah

The writer made the guy sounds like a baby
