It appeared mysteriously, at night, and destroyed the town with amazing swiftness. Houses were flattened, the bodies of men, women, and children were crushed and mangled, hundreds were missing, vanished without a trace. No one knew what had happened or why. Years later, the sole survivor of the holocaust, Tom Bartlett, began to suffer blinding visions—visions of a huge creature, unparalleled in size, intelligence, and evil. He was frightened, but something was calling him back to the ruins of his boyhood home. While I did enjoy this book and in fact, loved some of it, it was a bit on the slow side for me. It did pick up along the way.
I especially loved the origin twist on this story. The characters were unique and interesting.
The narration was fantastic. Andrew has a great voice and perfect delivery. His voice is well suited for this genre.
This book is a complete standalone.

Of all of his horror novels, I think this is Schoell's best. It does a superb job of touching on the themes of addiction and past trauma, which the hero, much of the supporting cast, and even the villain struggle with. Even the most minor characters are well fleshed out. The action and horror scenes are appropriately exciting and terrifying, and Andrew Gibson does a fine job performing.

William Schoell's monster masterpiece

So for my overall thoughts, I would say if you like monster-related stories that this is an okay book. It may intrigue your curiosity but it ultimately feels like a dated precursor to more modern kaiju-related media like Project: Nemesis.
