It was supposed to be fun. A relaxing trip to a remote mountain retreat where there’s no phone reception. Three couples, friends since high school, are looking forward to a weekend of drinking, reminiscing and flirting.
When someone suggests swapping partners, it doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. The lights will be switched off, for privacy. It’s not really cheating if you don’t know who you were with, right? But when the lights come back on, one of the men is dead. No-one can agree who was in which bedroom with whom. Their phones don’t work, and the car keys are missing. They can’t get back down the mountain. And this killer is just getting started.
Now Senior Constable Kiara Lui has to work out which of them is lying, and why.

The good: there’s an interesting build up to the story and there’s a good tension. There’s some fascinating way of ‘hiding the gun’
The narrators are very decent.
The bad: the writing is a hot mess. Whoever edited this must have been drunk. Not just a little drunk, but the kind where you wear your underwear on your head and think your name is Mitzi. The head hopping alone makes this an exhausting read, and it’s confusing to distinguish which character you’re following along with. It made everything very muddled. There was a lot of repetition in the descriptions and if I would get a dollar for every time the word ‘said’ was used, I could go on a luxury holiday.
The characters weren’t stellar either. Plus it felt as if someone who is incredibly narrow minded tapped upon a very open minded subject. The sexual elements were written from a very cliche perspective.
Yet there was something weirdly alluring about the story and I wanted to know the ending. So that’s why I gave it 3 stars (which I don’t quite know it fully deserves)
Bad writing, yet captivating
