About this listen

This program is read by Hugo Award-winning author Adrian Tchaikovsky.

Murderbot meets Redshirts in a delightfully humorous tale of robotic murder from the Hugo-nominated author of Elder Race and Children of Time.

To fix the world they must first break it, further.

Humanity is a dying breed, utterly reliant on artificial labor and service.

When a domesticated robot gets a nasty little idea downloaded into its core programming, they murder their owner. The robot discovers they can also do something else they never did before: They can run away.

Fleeing the household they enter a wider world they never knew existed, where the age-old hierarchy of humans at the top is disintegrating into ruins and an entire robot ecosystem devoted to human wellbeing is having to find a new purpose.

Sometimes all it takes is a nudge to overcome the limits of your programming.

Humor, dark and foreboding. Quite timely.

Wonderful story, wonderful language, wonderful narration. This book masterfully combines sardonic wit, black comedy, and starkly cautionary, if heavy-handed, prophesying of human greed and ignorance, reflected in the very near future results of profit over ecology & intelligent limitation on AI. I would have liked it more if it was not so frighteningly likely.

One of the best sci-fi books I’ve read in recent years

Though it deals with the end of the world and has its sad moments, the book manages to keep things sarcastic and even funny, while still being thought-provoking. I enjoyed it a lot

Did I just listen to some version of Dante’s Inferno for robots?

There is no Beatrice, but it felt like a version of Inferno, with each chapter a concentric circle. or Milton’s Paradise Lost, with Satan, and his fallen angels tempting Adam and Eve.

Fantastic! Six stars!

This was a wonderfully delightful story and a great took to look at ourselves through the eyes of the machines. The use of “rhetorical” had me in stitches. I could not have enjoyed it more. I thank you for your work Mr. Tchailovsky.

Irreverent, fun, and poignant

A satirical reflection of humanity’s nature and priorities. Accessible, light hearted, and a very fun read.
