The second book in Andrew Hastie's imaginative and original Infinity Engines series, Maelstrom is an action-packed dystopian time travel adventure.

Caitlin has disappeared and someone has changed history. Lost in an alternate reality, Josh must discover who has disrupted the timeline and try to fix the continuum.

But there's a problem. The Order has become divided over an old manuscript which describes the Maelstrom—a chaotic realm filled with ancient gods that exists outside of the timestream. One faction believes that Josh will be the key to unlocking its power, the other that he needs to die to save them from oblivion.

Josh must find Caitlin and a way into the maelstrom, discover the author of the book and rewrite the prophecy.

I love the ideas that inspire this story.

The continuity between this and the first book was so thin that I didn't realize it wasn't a standalone book until halfway through. When I pick a book, I don't research it much, I just pick what's on my "shelf" that looks interesting. It doesn't take a lot to remind the reader of the previous story line.

The book started off with the protagonist landing in a post-apocalyptic world. I'm not a fan of post-apocalyptic stories. But I slogged on and it got better. The first book in the series was dark, but not post-apocalyptic.

There was too much torture in the story. I don't think it was important to the story line and I found it off-putting. Some of it was pretty graphic for my taste. Most of it was mentioned in passing. It just added to a darkness in the story that already started with post-apocalyptic scenes.

The book ended poorly. Most things were settled, but it ends in the middle of an action.

Interesting ideas, poor continuity & end

Books have all held up and not dissolved into silly drama. Plot is moving forward at a good pace without getting played out.

Great series, well done
