About this listen

Looking back, they called those turbulent times simply The Troubles.

A period of chaotic upheaval and destruction that sent the Republic reeling through successive crises, each growing more desperate as the galaxy spun out of control.

Exactly when The Troubles started…that was open to interpretation. After the Savage Wars were thought to have ended, said some. Others claimed the period of death and war began with the Republic's action on Psydon. Still, others pointed to the Republic's forced migration of the zhee or even the arrival of the Mid-Core Rebellion, culminating in victories against the Legion at Kublar and the genocidal atrocities extending as far as Rhysis Whan.

But no matter when they began, the galaxy-shaking events of The Troubles were well remembered by those who suffered through them, and the scars of those upheavals would leave their indelible mark for years, and perhaps lifetimes, to come.

The brazen and open government corruption infesting the former capital planet of Utopion.

The arrival of the tyrant Goth Sullus, who briefly united opposition to the Republic before falling prey to the vanity of the title…The Emperor.

The Legion's invocation of Article Nineteen of the Republic Constitution, which brought an all-consuming flame to a simmering cold war that had long been stewing between the rulers and those forced to fight their needless wars.

The sudden unexpected attack by an alien race known as the Cybar. Relentless. Cruel. Inhuman in the extreme.

And finally, the long-planned return of a tribe of lost Savages, led by their messiah…the Golden King.

The Troubles. A quaint name for a horrific period in the galaxy's history. A period whose atrocities were superseded only by the terror of the Savage Wars that had come before. Almost no corner of the galaxy was spared a taste of terrible war, cutthroat intrigue…and remorseless death.

In the aftermath, this battered galaxy now longs for peace and stability. The Republic, now reformed, seeks to govern by the rule of law. But no matter how sincere the reform, how earnest and well-meaning the ruler, some worlds refuse to place their destiny in the hands of others. Ever again.

Been there. Done that. Got burned along the way.

Because some things never change. Power summons would-be tyrants eager to seize it. Ancient vendettas cry out to be settled. Corruption worms its way through the souls of men too weak to resist it or too wicked to try. And dead-eyed killers gather in all the usual starports, awaiting the opportunity to do what they do best for the promise of a quick credit.

Through it all, the silent Legion waits for its cue to once more tread upon the stage and break its enemies through nothing more and nothing less than total violence of action capably applied. As though this time… things will be different.

Out on the edge, they say…

Everyone's got a plan until the Legion shows up.

RC Bray's voice was missed

The story os excellent. Filling in some backstory on Wraith/Keel that is referenced in S2. The filling in of after the downfall of the Golden King is excellent as well.

The narration was not bad. I just wish that voice actors would try to keep continuity of voices rather than recreate characters that we have heard for 15 books already.

Great continuation of the story!

Fleshing out Wraitgs character is awesome! was disappointed that "Mr. Galaxies Edge." RC Bray was not narrating the story however.

Awesome combination of Flashbacks & Post Civil War Story Lines

The new narrator did a pretty good job. I love how they blended in the new narrator at the very beginning of the book. I thought that was classy. With a bunch of new characters being introduced, and the jumping around between past and present, the storyline was kind of hard to follow at times, but still enjoyable.

This book feels like this season is building into becoming a political thriller type storyline. I hope the next book in the season continues to delve deeper into Keel's progression into becoming the rogue scoundrel and highlights all of the badass stuff that he did after he went undercover.

Overall, I was very pleased with the book and look forward to the next in the season.

Set the hook deep

I'm hooked and waiting on pins and needles to see what comes next. Ill admit to a little apprehension about whether they'd be able to pull me back in after S2, but Nick and Jason did it, I feel that same excitement and sense of intrigue that I got from the start of Season 1, and I need to know what happens next.
Mark Boyett did a great job narrating, he deserves his reputation as one of the greats in audiobook narrating.

Great book

I was a little off put at not having RC Bray perform the audio- but Mark Boyette knocked it out of the park. As usual, Jason and Nick rocked the GE universe. Keep ‘em coming men!

Should have been a side-story

I love Galaxy's Edge, but this was boring. I kept zoning out and realizing 2 chapters later. I like the backstory stuff and like the idea of the adjudicator, but I just didnt care. Mark Boyett is is good. Did I miss RC Bray? sure. do I dislike change? yep. but Boyett is good.

Still the Best Team

Anspach and Cole are like Brooks and Dunn, simply the best of the best. Rock on Gentlemen, rock on.

Hardly missed Bray. Fantastic story as always.

Jason and Nick delivered another solid storyline and Mark did a fantastic job narrating. I love R.C.Bray and loved the warm transfer in the beginning!

The only thing that bothered me was Mark’s version of bucketed voices. Something about it was just a little off to me

Looking forward to the next!

Stunningly good for a book this far into a series.

Almost every series that has started great eventually had to be abandoned as they got repetitive, dropped in quality, or just turned to "this ludicrous thing happened so the story can continue". This book expertly avoids all these pitfalls. I couldn't turn this one off and am totally on board now waiting for the next one. The narrator was also superb.

Great prequel… kinda

It was as good as the other books. Always like stories with wraith. I wonder if they will have a bounty hunter series about him?
