A thrilling and incredibly sexy new dark romantasy series from Sunday Times bestselling author Elizabeth May.

A princess and a war-weary god met in the ashes of a broken city, forging a pact in blood and sacrifice.

Now, centuries of fragile peace are on the brink of collapse …

Bryony Devaliant was born to die—again and again. In Vartena, royal blood is the currency of peace, with every monarch sacrificed and resurrected to appease the gods. But when rebellion stirs, the god-king sends his deadliest weapon to restore order: an immortal assassin known only as the Wolf.

Evander has perfected the art of killing over centuries—until his latest target becomes the one person he cannot destroy. When forbidden desire burns between the assassin and the sacrificial princess, their connection threatens the fragile boundary between gods and mortals. And when that boundary shatters, empires crumble. Because when gods fall in love with mortals, mortals are always the ones to break.

Inspired by Beauty and the Beast and Eros and Psyche, this dark, seductive tale is perfect for fans of Raven Kennedy's Plated Prisoner series, with the wit and spice of Callie Hart's Quicksilver. Packed with dark fairytale vibes, gothic romance, and tropes like enemies to lovers, forced proximity, death pacts, and villain-gets-the-girl, this is a story where love is as deadly as it is irresistible.

Exquisite portrayal

The hype on BookTok for this one absolutely lives up to expectations—especially for a standalone. And did I mention the spice? Because yes… it’s spicy. Listener beware: this might not be the audiobook you want playing loudly in public.

The story centers on gods and demigods versus humans and the difficult choices required to end the war and bring peace to the realm. At its heart, this is a romantasy built around a forbidden love. A god falls for a human, and the story follows the trials they must face to keep their relationship hidden—and eventually fight for the right to be together.

By the end, I found myself wishing for more stories from this world, especially focusing on some of the side characters. While it feels like the story could easily expand into a second book, the ending is still satisfying enough that it works well as a standalone.

Overall, if you enjoy forbidden love, high-stakes fantasy, and plenty of spice, this is definitely one to check out.

Loved this! Loved the narrators. Wish it was duet narration instead of dual. The male narrator was top tier!

Male Narrator

The story and romance build was perfection! The narration wasn’t perfect but it also wasn’t terrible. The female narration was kind of fast paced even at a slowed speed but I would listen to it again!

Perfection!

The pausing and swallowing took me out of the story every single time. It was very frustrating. It was like nails on a chalkboard. Other than that it was good. I liked the female narrator. I know she had some criticism in the comments, but I really enjoyed how she read the story. It felt like I was reading it in my head, which is really a big deal for me, because audio books are so cringey to me that I have a hard time with them. This totally worked for me

Good
