Falling in love with your husband is anything but convenient in this steamy romance from the New York Times bestselling author of Business or Pleasure.

Dani Dorfman has somehow made it to her thirties without knowing what she wants to do with her life. So when an office romance ends poorly and gets her fired, she applies for a job in Amsterdam, idly dreaming of escaping the mess she’s created, but never imagining she'll actually get it.

Except she does. By the end of her first week in Amsterdam, she’s never felt more adrift or alone. Then she crashes her bike into her high school ex-boyfriend—and suddenly life is blooming with new opportunities.

Wouter van Leeuwen was a Dutch exchange student Dani’s family hosted, a forbidden love that ended in a painful breakup. Years later, there’s still sizzling chemistry between them, and okay, maybe a little animosity. More importantly, Wouter needs to be married to inherit a gorgeous family home on a canal—and when Dani's job falls apart, she needs a visa. As the marriage of convenience pushes them together in unexpected ways, Dani must decide whether her new life is yet another mistake—or if it's worth taking a risk on a second chance.

Critic reviews

"What Happens in Amsterdam is the second-chance, marriage-of-convenience romance of my DREAMS. Dani and Wouter's romance blooms with exquisite tension against the backdrop of a tenderly described Amsterdam, and I saw so much of myself in Dani's path to finding—and trusting—herself. Rachel Lynn Solomon is one of my very favorite authors out there, so it's no surprise that her latest easily takes its rightful place on my favorites shelf."—Jessica Joyce, USA Today bestselling author of You, With a View

"Every time I start a new Rachel Lynn Solomon romance, I'm reading greedily, tripping over myself to get to the next part, trying to slow myself down so I can savor it as long as possible. What Happens in Amsterdam delivers everything I've come to expect from Rachel: flawed, well-drawn characters; tender, intimate moments of connection; hot, emotional sex scenes; and a thoughtful examination of the world and our place in it. But this book has something extra special about it, too -- it's a love letter to Amsterdam, to the pure sweetness of first love, to the courage it takes to start a new life in a new place or to start over with someone who hurt you once before." —Alicia Thompson, USA Today bestselling author of With Love, from Cold World

"This is Rachel Lynn Solomon in top form. Sensitive, sexy, emotional, and deeply clever. A romantic masterclass in yearning."—Tarah DeWitt, USA Today bestselling author of Savor It

“Solomon showcases her talent for creating flawed by appealing characters, and it’s gratifying to see Dani and Wouter’s relationship mature.”—Publishers Weekly

“I can change. I can find myself a thousand different times, and I'm not done yet.”

I enjoyed this a lot!

Dani needs a fresh start so she moves to Amsterdam for that. But on her first week there, everything is going the wrong way. She then crashes her bike into Wouter, who was a exchange student who stayed with her and her family when they were both teenagers. He was also her first love who broke her heart. So they reconnect and they find themselves in different situations but with the opportunity to help each other.

I picked this one up for Prosed: a Romance Book Club, I didn't even know about it before it was chosen as our read for this month. But I do have some other books by the author on my TBR. I'm really excited to read the rest of her books now that I've read and enjoyed this one.

The romance was so good, they were in love as teenagers and they reconnect as adults. I loved the small details like how Wouter helps Dani learn more words in Dutch. Also there's a trope in here that's super important to the plot and I loved that.

I really liked the story. It was an emotional read for a few reasons and I liked the characters a lot. It was very entertaining.

I loved the ending, it was beautiful.

This is definitely my favourite story of the year so far. Fantastic story and the narration was excellent! The accents and animation were a delight, I didn’t want the story to end. Wouter is my new favourite book boyfriend!

Superb story and narration

The varied accents lent credibility to the characters; nicely done. The downside was that the volume fluctuates at times so great that I had to adjust to hear the soft spoken narratives and turn down when the exuberance of the conversation was too loud.

Steamy romance rediscovered

I enjoyed every single moment of this book, from start to finish! It was such feel good vibes: but also dealt with some real life issues! Loved the 2nd chance romance & marriage of convince trope! This book felt being transported to Amsterdam, and now I want to visit! Definitely one I will reread again! P.S. if you liked Passion Project by London Sperry, this gave me similar vibes!!
Loved it!

Typical of what I’ve come to expect from RLS, this story is adorable and brings on kick-your-feet giddiness, but has some very relatable struggles and perfect spice. The narrator was great - perfect voice for the FMC. Loved this story and this couple!

So cute!
