Emma Manchester was a proper young lady with the soul of a pirate. For the last twelve years she’s done everything she’s supposed to do, while yearning to break the rules, and now she’s engaged to marry a respected magistrate and her future looks bland and assured, without the chance of ever sailing free.

Ben Crawford was the love of her childhood, her partner in crime, until he was driven away by her harpy of a mother. Now, all of sudden he’s returned as Nick, king of thieves and ruler of a den of criminals, and she still feels the same way about him.

But the judge isn’t about to let her go and Nick doesn’t want to drag her into the mess his life is, especially since the judge and he are at odds. And yet, he cannot stay away .

What’s a girl with the soul of a pirate going to do?

I know this is regency romance, but c’mon! Emma was like the five year old kid that runs away to join the circus … only she’s 23 and kept running straight towards danger while failing to understand even the most obvious truths. Nick was a slightly better sell as a crime boss, although it was laughable the number of times he threatened folks (Emma included) and then utterly failed to follow through (yeah, very Dread Pirate Roberts saying ‘goodnight Wesley, I’ll most likely kill you in the morning!)

Is it odd that I preferred the romance with secondary MCs Red Haired Molly and Tom Campion? Molly may have been stubbornly convinced she was unworthy of love, but she at least was a capable woman. And Campion went after Molly with the verve you’d expect from a true scoundrel.

Because it is regency romance, I gave the silly plot, with its even sillier characters, a huge dose of salt (as in, pillars of salt encasing the characters to make their ludicrous behaviors go down better). And, with a double romance, this ended up being a fun value listen.
