Fantastic!

I was so excited to see the Monsters of Faery series on audible! Mallory Dunlin’s writing is beautiful- she writes complex characters with generally tragic backstories and in a whole different world without it being overwhelming or feeling like you need to slog through the "world building section" of the book. We learn about Faery alongside the main character in a way that feels completely natural and seamlessly integrated into the story telling. She's very good at "show don't tell", her FMCs have solid emotional intelligence, and she brings a ton of emotional depth to her MMCs which I love to see!
The whole take on soul mates in the series is really cool! I love the thought that soulmates don’t just have to be romantic pairings and the innate knowledge of your mate’s true form. There's a bit of humor brought in and the banter is *chefs kiss*

Raquel Beattie did a FABULOUS job with the narration! She conveys the character’s emotions and personalities so well, and her voices for different characters utilize changes in cadence and accents as well as pitch- which means when she switches into male characters it’s not a jarring, too-deep grumble that takes you out of the story. I’m thrilled to see she continued with the other releases for the series.

I know the fourth book gets most of the attention, but I HIGHLY recommend the entire series! The first book is a bit of a slow burn, but there’s plenty of tension and attraction between our main characters along the way. Mallory writes stories that illustrate the relationships my inner romantic craves within truly fascinating and engaging plot, which continues to build upon itself and connect as the series progresses. 5 stars, will be reading and listening again!

Lots of feels

Well written romance with a great plot and interesting characters. This book has it all.

Disappointed

I can tell that the author truly knows how to write, however, there's wayyy too much rambling in this book. The story could have been great if she didn't focus on the FMC's inner dialogue for pages at a time. it was mentally exhausting listening to the over rationalization of every single thing that occurred.

SPOILER:
I tried to press on and ignore my previous statement but the part where the MMC bangs another woman while trying to woo the FMC was tacky and cringe. Then the FMC tried to rationalize it in her "holier-than-thou" way while pressing down her jealous feelings, killed it for me.

Additionally, the whole time I thought about how WILD it is for someone to lose the person they love, only to move on in a week, while rationalizing her lack of grief by convincing herself it's because she's a "strong person." The entire time I was listening I kept picturing my boyfriend and how absolutely devastated I would have been if he tragically died and the fact that I would be catatonic for weeks to months. Meanwhile the FMC is over here flirting with a fantasy monster.
