In a dystopian world where women are scarce and fertility rates are declining, Charlotte is captured and sold to three powerful demons. She’s brought into a household filled with secrets, deception, and simmering desire. As truths unfold, she confronts painful realities about the world she thought she knew, and the men who purchased her.
The female decline was swift.
Birth rates dropped at an alarming rate, and within years, men across all realms grew restless and aggressive. Their desperation led to women being collected at birth and sold at auction, and humans gradually became one of the most sought after.
Parents began hiding their daughters, birthing and stowing their females underground in a desperate attempt to keep them safe.
Charlotte is one of them.
Hidden from the men who would tear her family apart to get to her, she’s accepted that she’ll live her entire life within the thick walls of her childhood home.
When the human government permits a large-scale raid, Charlotte is one of the unlucky women caught. Forced out of hiding and thrown into the home of three powerful demons, Charlotte must learn how to stay alive in a world she’s only experienced through stories from her parents.
This paranormal fantasy romance is book 1 of 5 in the ongoing The Female series

We start with strong Handmaid’s Tale vibes: Charlotte, our 25-year-old untouched FMC, is captured and sold in a world where women are a rarity. She ends up with the King of Wrath and his two brothers—but ultimately, she’s claimed by Gray, who only wants her for companionship. And here’s where things go off the rails.
Charlotte… whew. She’s kind of insufferable. She doesn’t want to feed Gray, but she doesn’t want him to cheat either. She pulls the same push-pull nonsense with his brothers, and I just didn’t get it. These men—strong, respectful, and frankly way more patient than they should’ve been—give her everything. A private office, her own bedroom, education, orgasms without even pushing sex because she’s “not ready.” And how does she repay them? By treating them like garbage while sitting on the fence about every single decision.
Plot-wise? Not much happens. We’re teased with a solution for the female decline across all species, but instead of leaning into that cool dystopian angle, we spend way too much time circling Charlotte’s indecision. Add in the fact that the spice is minimal and underwhelming, and I just couldn’t stay invested.
Honestly, this could have been a fun, dark, and spicy story with actual tension and payoff. Instead, it fell flat—too much angst with not enough action. I don’t think I’ll continue the series.
If you’re into slow-burn dystopian set-ups with a frustrating heroine and patient men, this might work for you. But for me? It was a whole lot of “meh.”
