More intrigue from the Barons

11 books in, and I'm still hanging on to this crazy series. The Barons trilogy continues to be the biggest outlier in the Forsyth universe for me. Am I still completely invested? Absolutely. Will I be here the second the final book releases? Without question. But while I'm enjoying this trilogy, it hasn't captivated me in quite the same way as the previous houses. I think in part because the deeper we get into the series, the more prescribed I become about I think (or want) a house's trilogy to be. This one definitely has been different than I expected, but still wildly entertaining.

Going into the Barons, I expected darker. The Barons have always felt like these almost mythical figures lurking in the shadows of Forsyth. I wanted ancient traditions, ruthless power, bloodlust, unsettling rituals, and a King who inspired absolute fear. Instead, this trilogy has taken a different approach. The Baron King is far more conflicted than I ever expected, weighed down by duty and clearly miserable in the role he's been forced into. It's definitely not the version of him I built up in my head after the earlier books...but strangely, he's become the most interesting part of this trilogy for me. In part because i'm just not sure what I think about this version of him. I'm fascinated to see what happens now that more of who he really is has been revealed.

Arianette is growing on me. The Barons has been interesting because the guys ALWAYS take a minute for me to get on board with...that's part of their charm, they are horrible at first lol. Ari is the first heroine I've not quite gotten behind right away. I don't think she's reached her full potential yet, but that's exactly why I'm excited for the final installment. One of my favorite things about every Forsyth trilogy is watching these heroines discover their own strength and slowly realize the power they hold over the men who once held all the control. I can see that journey beginning for Ari, and I have a feeling she's going to become a phenomenal Monarch by the end. I'm also really looking forward to seeing her build relationships with the other women of Forsyth because that's always been one of my favorite parts of this world.

The romance and relationships are also unique here. I don't feel the same level of connection across the Barons themselves (much less of a unit), and the romance feels almost comfortable at times. which is a flip of what we're used to. Ari already trusts them, she feels safe with them, and while that's healthy, it also means there's less emotional tension driving the romance. I found myself wanting a bit more of that intoxicating emotional obsession and toxicity these authors usually deliver so effortlessly. The Barons don't stand out individually fully yet, like we're just scratching the surface, and I still occasionally found myself trying to remember who was who.

What continues to keep me completely hooked, though, is the bigger picture. The mystery surrounding the missing girls is easily the strongest thread running through this trilogy. Every new piece of information just raises more questions, and I have approximately one hundred theories floating around in my head. As Ari slowly uncovers more of her memories, it feels like we're inching closer to something huge. Add in the way all the different Houses are becoming more intertwined, and it really feels like everything is building toward something massive for the Forsyth universe as a whole. Not to mention, my favorite house to be curious about is just around the corner. And that ending? Yeh, need answers.

The audiobook continues to be a fantastic way to experience this series. I've listened to most of Forsyth on audio, and once again the performances add so much atmosphere and emotion to an already immersive world. The cast does a wonderful job bringing each character's personality to life, making the tension, vulnerability, and chemistry even more compelling. Audio is definitely the way to go.

This may not have reached the heights of my favorite Forsyth trilogies yet, but I'm far too invested in this world to walk away now. If anything, this book feels like it's carefully setting the stage for a finale that could completely change my opinion of the Barons. I'm crossing my fingers that the last book delivers the emotional intensity, darkness, and unforgettable character moments I've come to expect from this incredible universe.

Good story terrible female voice

Love this series but the Barron books were difficult to get thru with the female reader. Ugh I listen to a lot of books and this voice is awful had to speed her up and thought about just giving up but really there the last 2 books so…..
