Publisher's summary

Inspector Kate Martinelli has worked the SFPD's Homicide Detail for nearly 30 years. She knows all about how a cop builds a case bit by bit to create a clear story from the scattered pieces of evidence.

Until the day her 15-year-old daughter, Nora, happens to ask about an aunt she'd never met. Kate's kid sister died in the 1980s, a wild young woman who lost control of a car and hit a tree, end of story...except it isn't. Because once Kate begins to look, seeking to reassure Nora that it was only a senseless accident and not the suicide a small town's gossip made it, she starts to find pieces that don't fit the picture. Holes in the evidence. Mismatched fragments that change the story Kate has told herself all these years - the story that for her, was the beginning of everything.

What did happen in Diamond Lake that night? Was it an accident, or a hushed-up suicide? Or was her sister's death something darker yet?

Happy to catch up.

I'm so glad that there's a new Kate Martinelli story after all these years, it's been wonderful to catch up with all the characters.
I hope there will be a chance to read about them again.
I listened to the whole series again before starting this one and I really enjoyed it. It was different and much more personal than the earlier ones.
The narrator was superb - again.

Loved it

Very satisfying to get the back story to this series. Although it had been many years since I had read the last episode, I was able to slip back into the familiar characters. I too would love to see new books in the series.

My absolute favorite

I have enjoyed all the Martinelli books, but this one is by far and away my favorite. I couldn’t put it down. It was great to learn so much more about her backstory and how she came to be.

Kate is back!

I love this series by Laurie King. It’s a favorite and I wish Ms. King would start writing them again. It was quite a treat to be able to listen to this, even though it was much shorter than I would’ve liked it to be. Please write more of these.!

So glad to have another Kate Martinelli tale

Hooray! Another Kate Martinelli tale, even if it is only a novella. Unfortunately, the tale doesn't really become interesting until Mark Field's name is mentioned. Alyssa Bresnahan's narration is on point, as usual.

Quit Before End

The language was so bad and in my opinion, not necessary. It ruined the story for me. There must be other words besides the F bomb that would work just as well. I never need it.
