Hélène ne se berce pas d’illusions quant aux intentions du Docteur Mengele, mais elle accepte de coopérer lorsqu’il lui demande d’organiser une garderie et une école pour les enfants roumains du camp. Brutalisée physiquement et émotionnellement par la situation à Auschwitz, Hélène parvient à rassembler ses forces pour protéger coûte que coûte les enfants dont elle a la garde. Grâce à sa seule volonté, Hélène offre un refuge aux enfants d’Auschwitz, un acte de bonté et d’altruisme si grand qu’il illumine à lui seul la nuit la plus sombre de l'histoire de l'Humanité.
