About this listen
A bicycling and travel audiobook like no other. It offers an entertaining and inspirational listen for all audiences. It tells the story of a 66-year-old grandfather who has never ridden a bicycle for more than a few miles at a time and sets out to ride a bicycle from one coast of the United States to the other. He does this ride by himself with no one along for company and no one following along when things go wrong. It recounts the dangers, trials, tribulations, fatigue, and despondency he endures. It also sings with the joy and exuberance only an exciting adventure can bring forth.
While the audiobook is a travel log of captivating sites and wonderful people from the Pacific to the Atlantic, it is so much more. It touches on stories of many women and men (both African, Native and European American) and the challenges they faced which helped shape the country he crosses. As such, it is a bit of a story about America. It also includes a few of the author’s own life challenges which help in understanding what got him into and through this ride.

Story
Ever since I cycled down the west coast of Canada and the United States as a means of saving the bus fare on a round-the-world trip, I dreamed of cycling the whole length of that landmass, from the southern tip of South America all the way up to the Arctic Ocean. Returning home to a job I didn’t enjoy, that dream burned at my mind until, as a mature student in 1999, I was given the opportunity to take a year out and decided now was my time.

Story
At age 22, Charlie Walker left home in search of adventure. Fleeing the boredom that comes with comfort, he set off on a secondhand bicycle. The aim was simple: to pedal to the furthest point in each of Europe, Asia, and Africa. He didn’t train or plan. He just started. The journey was an escape from an unremarkable existence, a pursuit of hardship, and a chance to shed the complacency of middle England. From the brutality of winter on the Tibetan plateau, to the claustrophobia of the Southeast Asian jungle, the quest provided Charlie with ample opportunity to test his mettle.

Story
Many an incredible story may have been told about young courageous men and women cycling the globe in search of adventure, covering vast distances at speed each day with not a care in the world. Well, this story is a little different. It is a story about a 350-pound middle-aged, disabled, working-class husband and father. I was never a regular cyclist, and I knew nothing about bicycle maintenance and repair. Solo, self-financed, with no support network and without any fixed route plan other than, “I’m going that way.” What could go wrong? I wondered.

Anna was never anything like those "real" runners on telly, but when she read about New Zealand’s 3,000-kilometer-long Te Araroa Trail, she began to wonder...perhaps being a "real" runner was overrated. Maybe she could just run it anyway? The Pants of Perspective is a witty, colorful, and at times painfully raw account of a journey to the edge of what a woman believes herself to be capable of. It is a coming-of-age story that will lead you on a roller-coaster ride through fear, vulnerability, courage, and failure.

It was 23 months after his accident, and Peter was still dealing with constant excruciating pain. He'd seen dozens of doctors and tried a myriad of medications, but nothing seemed to work. Faced with the impossible choice of suffering through the rest of his life, he had an unlikely epiphany, "If I could somehow hike 2,000 miles on the Appalachian Trail, then my leg will have to be better." He set a starting date three weeks out, cobbled together a novice's pack, and set off on a journey destined to change his life forever—though not exactly how he had envisioned it.

AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this book abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning.

Emma Gatewood told her family she was going on a walk and left her small Ohio hometown with a change of clothes and less than $200. The next anybody heard from her, this genteel, farm-reared, 67-year-old great-grandmother had walked 800 miles along the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail. And in September 1955, atop Maine's Mount Katahdin, she sang the first verse of "America, the Beautiful" and proclaimed, "I said I'll do it, and I've done it."

In 114 days, they trekked across 15 countries and 38 cities with nothing but their backpacks, their smartphones, and each other. Not Afraid of the Fall is the unvarnished story of their off-the-cuff journey: from cliff-jumping off Croatia's untouched coasts to bathing with rescued elephants in Thailand and far beyond.

It was a good story, but......
Let me get this out of the way first.
Wonderful story, wonderful adventure, inspirational I suppose, informational as well. Tragic that your grandson must deal with the disease and I do wish all affected good tidings and a swift recovery. Children shouldn't suffer.
Mr. Fowler's descriptive story of his bike ride across America indeed inspires one to do the same if for no other reason that to do it. I have always wanted to do something similar and at 66, I better get my butt moving. His admirable reason for doing the ride is described a few times in the book, perhaps a few more times than necessary. Mention it in the beginning of the book and move on with the story.
I have listened to hundreds of audiobooks and for the most part, the one's that are narrated by the author are the best ones as you get the words out of the horses mouth, so to speak. Then there are those authors who felt it necessary to hire someone else to narrate their book for one reason or another and it was a wise choice on their behalf. Finally, there are the authors who have elected to narrate the book themselves when they shouldn't have. I'm sorry to report Mr. Fowler, you should not have narrated your own book.
I know you wanted it to sound like you were reading the book to your grandson and I appreciate that. The downside is for the rest of us, it felt like you were reading a bedtime story to us. The tone in your voice most times was a grandparents tone when it needed to be an authors tone. There were the errant pauses and stammers from time to time and a few mispronunciations (didn't anyone review the recordings before it got pushed to ACX?).
But again, the story itself, was wonderful and you should be proud of yourself for the accomplishment. Sorry if I seemed too harsh, but really I am just offering some constructive critizism.
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
