Publisher's summary
As the novel moves backward and forward in time, from Quinn's boyhood on Blackwood Farm to present-day New Orleans, from ancient Athens to 19th-century Naples, Quinn seeks out the legendary Vampire Lestat in the hope of freeing himself from the specter that draws him inexorably back to Sugar Devil Swamp and the explosive secrets it holds.
A story of youth and promise, of loss and the search for love, of secrets and destiny, Blackwood Farm is Anne Rice at her mesmerizing best.

Story
In a sweeping saga of music and vengeance, the acclaimed author of The Vampire Chronicles draws listeners into 18th-century Italy, bringing to life the decadence beneath the shimmering surface of Venice, the wild frivolity of Naples, and the magnetic terror of its shadow, Vesuvius. This is the story of the castrati, the exquisite and otherworldly sopranos whose graceful bodies and glorious voices win the adulation of royal courts and grand opera houses throughout Europe. These men are revered as idols - and, at the same time, scorned for all they are not.

In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed", usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control, and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior.

The Barbarossa family’s roots are far more ancient and ethereal, but they are bound to the Gearys by a shared history of murder, insanity, and adultery. When Rachel Geary and Galilee, the seductive prince of the Barbarossa clan, fall in love, they unleash powerful enmities that could destroy both dynasties. Shorter and more conventional than some of Barker’s other work, this novel is especially rich with complex, passionate, three-dimensional characters, lush settings, and elegant language.

Seven-year-old Keighly Barrow never forgot the night she spied a boy her own age at her grandmother's Redemption, Nevada, mansion. He was staring at her from an antique mirror in the ballroom, standing among gaudily dressed women in an old-time western saloon. Keighly could only discover that his name was Darby Elder - and that he lived a century ago. Twenty years later, engaged to be married, Keighly inherited her grandmother's house. Back before the ballroom mirror, she faces a handsome cowboy whose roguish air radiates trouble.

Story
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

This is the first time I've heard David Pittu narrate, and I'm hugely impressed! I love listenening to his narration. Ann Rice is a genius - of course I love her writing, but I can't say enough about David's presentation of that writing. I will look for other books that he narrates.

Another exotic & crazy vampire story!
Would you listen to Blackwood Farm again? Why?
Only Anne Rice could have come up with such a great story, full of madly exotic creatures in the New Orleans swamplands.
I've listened to this audiobook 3X now, it's so engrossing. Lots of bizarre characters living eccentric lifestyles, lots of details to keep track of.
And I highly recommend the performance by David Pittu; he is SO perfect for all the voices [even the intersexed ones =o)]. He really livens the story up even more!
Indeed, I truly wish that the unabridged versions of The Vampire Armand & Vittorio the Vampire had used his voice, instead of wasting those entertaining stories on a really AWFUL reader like Jonathan Marosz!! Like Quinn (in Blackwood Farm) these were stories about young men who were given the
What was one of the most memorable moments of Blackwood Farm?
There are too many to try to boil them down to one. Read it & make your own decision.
What about David Pittu’s performance did you like?
He has an amazing talent with different intonations & accents.

Best book since tales of the body theif
Would you listen to Blackwood Farm again? Why?
Yes. With some books, not knowing is all that keeps you reading. So, once you know, there is nothing there for you. With Blackwood Farm, you are reading because the story affects you, I suspect I would still get a good feel from the story again.
What did you like best about this story?
As per the norm her tale is a hyperbole of human affection where passionate characters exchange surreal intimacy. Unlike some of the others, the pivitol character directs this surreal intimacy at many individuals which helps the reader feel as if they may be capable of such supernatural seaming endearment. It is not a private spectacle reserved for one person, the protag has a base intimacy with all good people that transposes to the reader, at least in my experience.
What does David Pittu bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His voice for the protag and his voice for Lestat were both exceptional and more convincing than the typical performance in these books. His emphasis and cadence mated perfectly, very good performance in my opinion.
If you could rename Blackwood Farm, what would you call it?
Little Brother, by Anne Rice
Any additional comments?
Don't skip to this, though as always she writes in such a way that you could if you wanted to. Take your time and savor the series, this book is not unique for being wonderful in the vampire chronicles.

Alive again!!
It has been years, maybe 10 or 11 since I've read a book by Anne Rice. This was one I missed, but it did not disappoint me in any way. A long a vivid story. The character have a full life, mysterious death and an even more troubled after life. Rich and then powerful, but a romantic Gentleman throughout. I loved it.

Very Well Done
I have been a huge Anne Rice fan for many years and I am glad that she continues to write interesting and provocative stories about the beloved vampires...and now incorporates them with the Mayfair witches. I had some reservations at first about "hearing" Anne Rice as I had always read her books but I must say that I was not disappointed and the narration was very well done.
