Anne of the Island was published in 1915, seven years after the best-selling Anne of Green Gables, partly because of the continuing clamor for more Anne from her fans - a fan base that continues to grow today!

In this continuation of the story of Anne Shirley, Anne leaves Green Gables and her work as a teacher in Avonlea to pursue her original dream (which she gave up in Anne of Green Gables) of taking further education at Redmond College in Nova Scotia. Gilbert Blythe and Charlie Sloane enroll as well, as does Anne's friend from Queen's Academy, Priscilla Grant. During her first week of school, Anne befriends Philippa Gordon, a beautiful girl whose frivolous ways charm her. Philippa (Phil for short) also happens to be from Anne's birthplace of Bolingbroke, Nova Scotia. Anne, always the good scholar, studies hard, but she also has many life lessons. This book sees Anne leave behind girlhood to blossom into a mature young woman.

This is my favorite book of all time, and the narration did it justice. The Canadian accent was very fitting.

Great narration

I've always lobbed this book and I finally found am audio version I was really happy with. Colleen Winton did a wonderful job. She was able to portray a decent distinction between the different characters. The young sounded young, the older characters sounded older, and the main narration was given the youthful sound that fit it. I'm crossing my fingers that Winton has narrated more of L.M. Montgomery's other works.

Best Narration

Beautifully narrated, brings this wonderful classic to life. What a pleasure. Very grateful that the Anne of Green Gables series is available to be listened to!

Excellent narrator

The narration was expressive and most characters in the story were clearly identifiable, however, I felt the narrator didn't capture the essence of Anne's personality. I think, Anne, in this rendition, came off more ordinary a girl then the spirited character I'm used to thinking her as. Also, in the narrator's attempt to make Gilbert sound masculine she lost his gentle and good natured qualities. Little Davey's voice is unlike any little boy's voice I have ever heard and was very amusing. All in all, I enjoyed it well enough but I had to use my own imagination to correct what I thought the narrator got wrong.

Good but could have been better. Let me explain.

Sweet, romantic and funny. A glorious tale of Anne finally growing up. She makes new friends and continues with old.

My favorite Anne book!
