Publisher's summary
Code Name Verity is a compelling, emotionally rich story with universal themes of friendship and loyalty, heroism and bravery. Two young women from totally different backgrounds are thrown together during World War II: one a working-class girl from Manchester, the other a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a wireless operator. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted friends. But then a vital mission goes wrong, and one of the friends has to bail out of a faulty plane over France. She is captured by the Gestapo and becomes a prisoner of war. The story begins in Verity's own words, as she writes her account for her captors.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. "Fellow editor Emily recommended this one to me, and for that I will always be mad at her/eternally grateful. This is a gorgeous story of friendship during WWII that absolutely cracked my heart open—at one point I was crying so hard I had to pull over on the side of the ride. Eighteen-year-old Robert Weekes is a practitioner of empirical philosophy - an arcane, female-dominated branch of science used to summon the wind, shape clouds of smoke, heal the injured, and even fly. Though he dreams of fighting in the Great War as the first male in the elite US Sigilry Corps Rescue and Evacuation Service - a team of flying medics - Robert is resigned to mixing batches of philosophical chemicals and keeping the books for the family business in rural Montana, where his mother, a former soldier and vigilante, aids the locals.

Not meant for me I think
While the after the fact writing throughout makes for an interest thought it lets the action down at the most important times. Perhaps it is better with a real book to see the jumps but can be confusing with audio.

little action but great-it's British not Hollywood
Nevertheless, it is fascinating. Maybe it's more a girl book than a boy book since it is mostly about the women of the war. It's charm is not in the action, but rather in the slow, steady buildup of characters and relationships until finally everything clicks into place and you get it.
There are lots of surprises along the way which you delightfully discover, and there's also love and anguish and loyalty and finally, truth. Excellent.
Usually having more than one narrator gets in the way of the story, but here, it is understandable, and enjoyable. Both readers did a great job.

One of my favorites
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, it was very well written and narrated. It would be perfect for that long drive with parents or teenagers.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Both women were wonderful. And it's the blend of the two that makes the story great.
What does Morven Christie and Lucy Gaskell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I don't think I could have imagined the accents on my own. The cadence brings so much personality to the story.
If you could rename Code Name Verity, what would you call it?
Friends in War
Any additional comments?
There's history to be learned, the reality of war, friendship, enemies, hardship and bravery under fire.

Loved it! Beautiful writing, fabulous performance.
What made the experience of listening to Code Name Verity the most enjoyable?
Although the book is exciting, it wasn't one I wanted to rush through. I wanted to savor the beautiful writing and details. The story and performance were so good that I began it again as soon as I finished.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Verity -- she is so clever, brave, creative, funny, smart, unstoppable.
What does Morven Christie and Lucy Gaskell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Morven Christie's Scottish accent really brings the saucy Scottish heroine to life! I totally believed I was hearing Verity herself.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
"Finding your best friend is like falling in love."
Any additional comments?
It's even better the second time through!

Great story, Great reader
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes! Although it was a heavy subject matter (POW in WWII) the author's style pulls you in to the point where you deeply feel for Verity & Maddie. Two amazing woman who even in the darkest times find goodness in humanity, humor, and reasons to do on. The readers were 2 of the best readers I have heard and brought the story to the next level.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Code Name Verity?
The way Julie tells the story of how she arrived in France
What about Morven Christie and Lucy Gaskell ’s performance did you like?
The nuance of ther tone, you could hear the tears, the laughter, the exhaustion, the stress, every emotion in the voice. Their pace was perfect. I cant imagine the story in any other voice
If you could rename Code Name Verity, what would you call it?
Straight on till Morning

This book immediately draws in the reader and is hard to pause. Both performers made it a wonderful experience. Thank you!
