Story
In the unbearable heat of another sultry Washington, D.C., summer, a serial killer is on the loose. Dr. Tess Court, one of the capital’s most successful psychiatrists, wants nothing to do with the case—until the police convince her to lend a hand to the lead investigator, legendary ladies’ man Detective Ben Paris. Scarred by his family’s history, Ben has even less use for shrinks than Tess has for him—but the forces of animal magnetism and a shared desire to catch the demented criminal known as “The Priest” inexorably erode the walls they’ve built.

Story
Little else in life is as dangerous as fire jumping. Flying past towering pillars of smoke, parachuting down to the edge of an all-consuming blaze, shoveling and sawing for hours upon hours, days at a time, all to hold the line and push back against the raw power of Mother Nature. But there’s also little else as thrilling - at least to Rowan Tripp. The Missoula smoke jumpers are one of the most exclusive firefighting squads in the nation, and the job is in Rowan’s blood: her father is a legend in the field. She’s been fighting fires since her eighteenth birthday.

But then, she also didn't expect that shooting him would land her in the crosshairs of a Magic Enforcement Agency task force, who wants to know why she killed their lead snitch. The more Prospero learns about the dangerous new potion the MEA is investigating, the more she's convinced that earning a spot on their task force is the career break she's been wanting. One of the Better Ones
This was the first book in the "Death" series that I read and it was so good, I started reading the series from the beginning. JD Robb has developed a world of complex characters that the reader begins to think of as close personal friends. The plot line is good, taking enough twists to keep you guessing. Dallas is a very believable character and one in which many women who are strong, capable people sick and tired of stupidity can easily relate to. The love scenes get a little tedious for me, but nevertheless are signature pieces of JD Robb. They don't ruin the plot in the least. Susan Erickson is at her best as the reader and the voices are crisp and identifiable. This is well worth buying.

Edge of Your Seat Story
Loved the plot line of this Eve Dallas story, but I'm finding Eve's angry tirades becoming over the top wearing on my nerves. Think I'll take a break from the Eve Dallas series for a while.

Another great story!
Once again, J.D. Robb has come up with a gripping story that kept me glued to my earbuds from beginning to end. In this 8th adventure of Dallas and company, Eve and Peabody are investigating a string of bizarre murders of elderly street people, each case involving the removal of an organ (heart, liver, etc.) by someone obviously very skilled as a surgeon. As they investigate, they discover that similar crimes have been commited in Chicago, Paris and London. The initial question is why? Why would someone want to gather these old, damaged and diseased organs -- they would be worth nothing on the organ market and they certainly couldn't be used for transplant purposes.
Besides the perplexing murder investigation, Eve must deal with a street cop, a female officer who does a lousy job, has a bad attitude, and hates Eve so much she wants to destroy her. When that officer is killed, Eve is one of the suspects. Even though none of the authorities believe that she is in any way guilty, she must be suspended during the investigation. And this is the real heart (npi) of this book. When her Commander takes her badge, Dallas falls apart and the reader gets a real look inside her feelings and the person she has made herself into through grit, determination and hard work. Losing the symbol of that person is almost more than she can bear. Seeing the progress of her recovery, while continuing to carry on her investigation outside of police authority, gives the reader a real emotional tie to this character.
I was glad to see in this story that Eve handled the final confrontation on her own, with no help from Roark. And I enjoyed meeting again all or most of the regular characters from the previous "In Death" books, and seeing the deepening of relationships. Two additional continuing characters make their debut in this book -- Officer Trueheart and Detective Baxter.
As usual, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Consistently Good
This was another good entry. The mystery itself was very good and the reasons for the crime was not clear until the very end. The interactions between the cast of characters was very enjoyable and I listen for these interactions more than for the mystery sometimes. I'm looking forward to listening to the next one in the series.
Another thing I like about this series is the consistency of the voices done by the narrator. Susan Ericksen has been the only narrator I've heard for this series and she keeps the voices the same across the many entries I've listened to. She is also a great narrator and fun to listen to.

Best Narrator
Characters are entertaining and plots are great, but the narrator is off the charts! Every core character has their own “voice” and speech pattern … she makes them come alive! And they are consistent not just through the book - but the whole series! Finally, all the accents are great - and I’ve never heard her mix them up, or miss a word or accent/personality. Makes it SO easy to lose yourself in the telling!
