Publisher's summary
James Patterson raises the stakes to their highest level, ever - when Alex Cross becomes the obsession of a genius of menace set on proving that he is the greatest mind in the history of crime.
Detective Alex Cross is a family man at heart - nothing matters more to him than his children, his grandmother, and his wife, Bree. His love of his family is his anchor, and gives him the strength to confront evil in his work. One man knows this deeply, and uses Alex's strength as a weapon against him in the most unsettling and unexpected novel of James Patterson's career.
When the ones Cross loves are in danger, he will do anything to protect them. If he does anything to protect them, they will die.
Critic reviews
“Michael Boatman gives a first-rate narration in this latest installment in the Alex Cross series. A second narrator, Tom Wopat, artfully portrays the homicidal maniac who plans to destroy Alex by destroying his family. Boatman captures the tension in the plot and keeps the listener engaged with the action. His portrayal of a bereaved Alex Cross - voice trembling with despair - will have listeners spellbound. And his total command of the story is like a zip line to Alex's hell. Though the symphony of terror isn't over at the conclusion of the audiobook, fans of Michael Boatman will revel in his delivery of this captivating thriller.” (AudioFile Magazine)
"[Patterson's] books don't pussyfoot around when it comes to the villains. These are bad, bad people... [I, Alex Cross] is political, with a lot of intrigue in high places." (Al Roker, The Today Show)

He slips into their homes at night and walks silently into bedrooms where women lie sleeping, unaware of the horrors they soon will endure. The precision of the killer's methods suggests he is a deranged man of medicine, propelling the Boston newspapers and the frightened public to name him "The Surgeon". The cops' only clue rests with another surgeon, the victim of a nearly identical crime. Two years ago, Dr. Catherine Cordell fought back and killed her attacker before he could complete his assault.

FBI analyst Kassidy Bishop is assigned to the "'For You' Killer" task force after a series of sadistic murders bearing the same signature arise in different parts of the country. The homicides are both calculated and savage, occurring in different states, but bearing the same signature: the words "for you" scribbled at each crime scene. The case chills Kassidy, bringing back memories of her own encounter with a violent criminal five years earlier.

I love it
I don't get why everyone was so upset with the ending? I loved every min of this book. The end was shocking but it was completely different from what James Patterson normally does. I am now so excited to read the next Cross book. If you don't mind cliffhangers and love the family development part of Alex Cross books then you will love this one. The only thing I don't like is how the guy voices John Sampson besides that it was amazing!

The Best Cross by Patterson
Would you listen to Cross My Heart again? Why?
Absolutely, this story has many twists that kept me listening all day!
What did you like best about this story?
Patterson makes Cross come alive. Not just a character, but a man with feelings - I empathized with Alex; felt his sincere anguish! Forgot this was just a story.
Love Nana Mama who can treat the big man, Alex, like a child and get away with it.
Which scene was your favorite?
Gut wrenching scene when Alex realized his family is gone.
Any additional comments?
Thanks, James Patterson, I can't wait for the next book!!!

Spoiler Alert-Very good!
Well I know one person that they wanted to call crazy but is in Seattle, safe, and unharmed, and untouched by Mulch LOL!!! Keep calling Christine crazy but that’s my girl and there is nothing crazy about her. Yes, I will always mention her and wish we heard more from her. This is my second time around reading the series so I know what’s coming. I miss her and hearing from already :(
I really love Michael Boatman though he got NanaMommas name backwards (he said Regina Cross Hope, should have been Regina Hope Cross). He’s really good as Alex. I love his voice, inflection, tone, everything. He’s in my top 3 Alex Cross narrators.
NanaMomma and Ali were solid captures and it made sense. Jani, eh. Damon should have known better. He knows first hand how crazy the world is from his father’s vocation and not to trust anyone. I’m sure his father has preached this to him and his siblings a number of times. Bree, eh. I do get sick of the bad guys bugging and watching Alex, and his family via video. Though I suppose getting work done on the house is somewhat of an excuse to not have the alarm on. Then again, the work that was being done was in the kitchen and the doors were still closed. I just wish Alex would be more protective of his family.
At any rate, it’s a very good read and interesting story. I feel so bad for Alex, he never has a clue until it’s too late. Or if he has a clue, he ignores it. Like the gift being in the wrong place on his desk or the sand on the floor. I really hated the way he blew my little baby Ali off when he told him a zombie was in the house. He paid attention but he didn’t follow up on the zombie clue until, of course, it was too late. He seems to always get played. I am looking forward to re-reading part 2 - Hope to Die!

This Review Needs a Title...So...
The story interweaves a couple of different plots nicely and keeps us reading at a very good pace. A psycho is after Alex and his family, Characters develop, bad guys emerge... Then the book ended, or I should say, it didn't end. It just ran out of words. I'm lucky, the book was on loan from a library so I don't feel like I've been rooked out of $15 for a hard cover book.
