Publisher's summary

America’s most-read, most-watched, and most beloved serial killer - Dexter Morgan - is back. After selling more than one million copies and inspiring the wildly popular number one Showtime series and top-rated crime drama on pay-cable television, New York Times best-selling author Jeff Lindsay returns with his most hilarious, macabre, and purely entertaining novel yet.

Dexter Morgan has always lived a happy homicidal life. He keeps his dark urges in check by adhering to one steadfast rule...he only kills very bad people. But now Dexter is experiencing some major life changes - don’t we all? - and they’re mostly wrapped up in the eight-pound curiosity that is his newborn daughter. Family bliss is cut short, however, when Dexter is summoned to investigate the disappearance of a 17-year-old girl who has been running with a bizarre group of goths who fancy themselves to be vampires. As Dexter gets closer to the truth of what happened to the missing girl, he realizes they are not really vampires so much as cannibals. And, most disturbing...these people have decided they would really like to eat Dexter.

Jeff Lindsay’s best-selling, dark, ironic, and oftentimes laugh-out-loud hilarious novels about the lovable serial killer with no soul (but a redeeming desire to kill only people who deserve it) have gained a legion of fans and assumed a place in our culture.

More dastardly deeds desired? Listen to more Dexter.

Disappointing. Much too silly.

I purchased this audio book knowing that it wouldn't be the same as the TV show but hoping it would still be entertaining. What I found was that the author's style was way too comedic for my tastes. We are supposed to suspend all logic. We are also to believe that he and his sister would step into some situations that clearly no person, let alone police officer, would consider without significant backup. I caught myself fast forwarding through the last 1/3 of the book. I guess I'll stick to Showtime. Two stars was actually charitable.

Worse and worser

I got into these books because of the Showtime series. The concept is good--bad guy kills other bad guys that like to do bad things to good people--but the writing gets worse and worse with each book. It like Charles Bronson and the Death Wish movies...the first one was good but by Death Wish 5--even deathier...you realize the ideas are all gone and the hope for improved dialog is just wishful thinking. This guy can't write, he has a lazy editor that basically checks for spelling errors and correct punctuation instead of challenging Jeff to improve and a publisher (also lazy) that is laughing all the way to the bank thinking he can't beleive this stuff sells. Successful actors often start acting classes to hone their craft...time for night school everyone;-((

change of narrator ruined a perfect series

What would have made Dexter Is Delicious better?

Nick Landrum to have narrated it. I couldn't finish this audio. Jeff Lindsey is the author which is cool, but he reads it like one fast run on sentence, and his voice for different characters, esp women was unbearable. I will buy the books to read, as I love the series, but I can not listen to him for one more minute.

Would you be willing to try another book from Jeff Lindsay? Why or why not?

Only in print. I can not listen to his narration. It was one of the worst I have tried to listen to.

What didn’t you like about Jeff Lindsay’s performance?

He reads rapidly with no breaks or inflections, like a run on sentence. His voice changes for different characters, especially women, were unbearable.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Dexter Is Delicious?

I can't say, as I was unable to finish the book. I will buy it in print. I love his books, just not his narration.

Any additional comments?

If you can find these audio books that Nick Landrum narrated, BUY them! Otherwise, buy them in print. The stories are awesome!

Dexter is Tasteless

A dreadful book. Cannibalism is entertaining? Not for me. The main character is a serial killer who works for the Police Department. Believable? Not to me. I could not - would not - finish this terrible story.

I'll be a lot more cautious . . .

I had been a subscriber since 2001 and listened to more than 100 audio books and loved just about all of them. Unfortunately, I bit on an Audible promotion for this one and purchased the book. I've always listened to a book to the very end and nearly finished it, but I gave up. It was so lame, so unfunny and so unexciting that I went into a depression realizing I not only wasted a credit, but all of those hours of listening. I couldn't deal with being fooled so badly again that I dropped my subscription to Audible in September 2010 and only today renewed. I was embarrased by this book and didn't want anyone to know I had anything to do with it. Well, now others know and I will not be fooled so badly again.

Next winner of the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest

I could not finish this book. I don't see the attraction to this over-the-top, sarcastic hyperbole that fills at least 50% of the pages, our should I say audio. Don't wast you money or your credits.

Weak

I love the whole Dexter story both the show and the books. The last book I thought was weak and had high hopes this book would bring it back up to par. Sadly this book was very weak and so slow!

Dexter's out of gas

Jeff Lindsay is out of gas. Dexter's delightfully droll tone seems forced, and his attempt to convert to the light side unconvincing. I could hear the plot contrivances creaking away. Plus, really stupid bad people. Lindsay sounds like a teenage boy trying to scare his friends on a sleep over, after watching too many monster movies. Stick with the debut of this series, and you'll keep your fond memories.

Note to Authors: Stick to writing.

Would you try another book from Jeff Lindsay and/or Jeff Lindsay?

Yes, if read by the original actor (who was great).

What other book might you compare Dexter Is Delicious to and why?

I don't think you can compare Dexter books to anything but other Dexter books. If you enjoy one you will probably enjoy them all to varying degrees.

How could the performance have been better?

Authors should not read their own stories unless they happen to be professional actors as well. Unfortunately Jeff's amateur performance ruined this book, I would recommend avoiding this audio book completely.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I couldn't get past the terrible performance.

Any additional comments?

Keep these Author's giant ego's in check and tell them they are not qualified to read their own books. We pay money for these audiobooks and deserve a professional quality performance, not some egomaniac author who doesn't care if his fans get their money's worth.
