About this listen

This program is read by the author.

From the New York Times best-selling author of Tears We Cannot Stop comes Michael Eric Dyson's Entertaining Race.

For more than 30 years, Michael Eric Dyson has played a prominent role in the nation as a public intellectual, university professor, cultural critic, social activist and ordained Baptist minister. He has presented a rich and resourceful set of ideas about American history and culture. Now for the first time he brings together the various components of his multihued identity and eclectic pursuits.

Entertaining Race is a testament to Dyson’s consistent celebration of the outsized impact of African American culture and politics on this country. Black people were forced to entertain white people in slavery, have been forced to entertain the idea of race from the start, and must find entertaining ways to make race an object of national conversation. Dyson’s career embodies these and other ways of performing Blackness, and in these chapters, ranging from 1991 to the present, he entertains race with his pen, voice and body, and occasionally, alongside luminaries like Cornel West, David Blight, Ibram X. Kendi, Master P, MC Lyte, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Alicia Garza, John McWhorter, and Jordan Peterson.

Most of this work will be new to readers, a fresh light for many of his long-time fans and an inspiring introduction for newcomers. Entertaining Race offers a compelling vision from the mind and heart of one of America’s most important and enduring voices.

A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin's Press

"Entertaining Race is a splendid way to spend quality time reading one of the most remarkable thinkers in America today." (Speaker Nancy Pelosi)

"To read Entertaining Race is to encounter the life-long vocation of a teacher who preaches, a preacher who teaches and an activist who cannot rest until all are set free." (Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock)

Amazing!!!

This brother who just happens to epitomizes what an intellectual should be about. His grittiness and down to earth swag makes it possible for anyone desirous of the truth to know that truth. I have been on a crusade to read everything he has ever written. I don’t agree with every word but every word provides an opportunity for a new way of thinking. I am on to the next one.

Michael Eric Dyson speaks the truth!

He is straightforward and righteous in his view about what we are facing in this country. He talks about religion, art, music, history, and other social issues affecting all Americans, especially the Black community. Very enlightening and a great resource for anyone who does not know that race has mattered. Michael Eric Dyson is a great orator that demands your attention to all he speaks on. He presents the facts and includes many others that came before and now that we all need to listen to. Thoughtworthy and very enlightening. Highly recommended to all that want to know the truth.

M.E.Dyson Entertaining At His Best

Let me count the ways I love this Linguist Genius, Master of Words and Extraordinary Teacher/Preacher. I devoured this audiobook because it was so entertaining in how he delivered every message. I laughed out loud constantly and paused for deep thought many times. I suggest you also get the hardcopy or eBook to slow down and savor the words on the page. Buy It, Gift It. Enjoy every minute of this excellent work of literary art.

An Entertaining Listen of "Entertaining Race"

After seeing and hearing Professor Michael Eric Dyson on TV over the years, I made a move to purchase an audible version of his book, "Entertaining Race." Listening for many hours to his narration was thoroughly enjoyable. From Beyonce to Alan Iverson to Barack H. Obama, Martin Luther King, Jr., Bill Cosby, and an entire cast of personalities, too numerous to list, made this listen an audible education. Informative, thought-provoking, funny, preaching, debate, and narration designed to build your vocabulary. I had to look up words such as "Manichaean" and "ontology." This first book will be my first of more writings by Michael Eric Dyson.

Entertaining Rsce

Reading this book is like a breath of fresh air. Micheal so brilliantly describes America’s hypocritical prejudice. To be Black in America is to live in fear of its hatred. Thanks Michael for telling the black and white story without watering the story down. I love it

Great Listen!

Great listen!
He brought up a lot of topics I was familiar with and he brought up a few topics I'm going to look further into. I love rap and sports. The listen got me interested in some of the writers and civil rights leaders that was mentioned. Great job! 1
