WHO WILL HAVE THE LAST LAUGH?
Stop me if you’ve heard this one. A thief, a candlemaker, an ex-mercenary, and a pig farmer walk into a trap…and what happens to them is no joke. When Riyria is hired to retrieve a jester’s treasure, Royce and Hadrian must match wits with a dwarf who proves to be anything but a fool. Difficult choices will need to be made, and in the end those who laugh last do so because they are the only ones to survive.
This is a standalone short story of 7,200 words. No prior knowledge of The Riyria Revelations or The Riyria Chronicles is required to enjoy it to its fullest, making this a perfect introduction for new readers or a chance for Riyria veterans to spend a little more time with old friends. The Jester is a story of adventure, bonds of friendship, and a recognition that the choices we make dictates the future we find.

Story
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Udo's biggest problem isn't being a digger (that's low class), or staying drunk (that's damn expensive), or avoiding the Dwergaz (they're monsters), or even pissing off the supposed Gods. It's that his reality...well, it isn't what he thought. And now, he can't even afford to drink because his so-called friend Nicz is cutting into his business, digging up tin, iron, and copper. The beloved King Ik is dead, and there was barely time to check his pulse before the royal throne was supporting the suspiciously shapely backside of an impostor pretending to be Ik's beautiful, long-lost daughter. With the land's heroic hunks busy drooling all over themselves, there's only one man left who can save the kingdom of Jenair. His name is Dungar Loloth, a rural blacksmith turned innkeeper, a surly hermit, and an all-around nobody oozing toward middle age, compensating for a lack of height, looks, charm, and tact with guts and an attitude.

The Sun Dragon spawned nine lesser dragons which devoured their parent for the power the elder possessed. These young dragons fought for choice bits of the Sun Dragon, but each only managed to eat a portion, thus giving them specific powers. Over time, these foul dragons were hunted down and slain by heroes of old.

Story
Form-defining short stories. First published in 1914, James Joyce defined what the short story could be with his collection The Dubliners. A mixture of prose and poetry, each story can be listened to independently, or as a collection. From childhood to maturity, we see what life - and ultimately death - can be, via an extraordinary cast of characters, all of whom experience an epiphany. There’s Father Flynn, the priest; Evelyn, the shop girl who dreams of escape; Mrs Mooney, the butcher’s daughter, who runs a boarding house.

Too short! Want more!
What made the experience of listening to FREE: The Jester (A Riyria Chronicles Tale) the most enjoyable?
Well, I guess because this was a Free short story donated by M.J. Sullivan to help his friend out, I really shouldn't complain. However, it was phenomenal! My hour commute to school was about as long as this short story is and I was extremely disappointed that I wouldn't have more of the tale to listen to on the way back. M.J. Sullivan is such a talented writer!
What was one of the most memorable moments of FREE: The Jester (A Riyria Chronicles Tale)?
The characters were in a precarious situation and (trying here not to give anything away) to get their way out, they had to use a bit of thinking, solving a puzzle/riddle of sorts. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't straight out solving stuff, the story was descriptive with action and filled with emotions of excitement and fear, but in the background there was some....thinking involved by a certain character. It was very intriguing.
Have you listened to any of Tim Gerard Reynolds’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. From the other Riyria Chronicles books. Fabulous as ever!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Definitely laugh.
Any additional comments?
Even if you don't find this author or the performance of T.G. Reynold's as fabulous as I do, this is free, it'll give you a good idea of what the main characters are like and whether you want more.
