Publisher's summary

In the second book in the Detective Harriet Foster thriller series, author Tracy Clark weaves a twisted journey into the underbelly of Chicago as Harriet and her team work to unmask a serial killer stalking the city’s aldermen.

The Chicago PD is on high alert when two city aldermen are found dead: one by apparent suicide, one brutally stabbed in his office, and both with thirty dimes left on their bodies—a betrayer’s payment. With no other clues, the question is, Who else has a debt to pay?

Detective Harriet Foster is on the case before the killer can strike again. But even with the help of her partner, Detective Vera Li, and the rest of their team, Harriet has little to go on and a lot at risk. There’s no telling who the killer’s next target is or how many will come next.

To stop another murder, Harriet and her officers will have to examine what the victims had going on behind the scenes to determine who could be tangled up in this web of betrayal…and who could be out for revenge.

Critic reviews

“Narrator Chanté McCormick has a strong no-nonsense tone that suits the sharp detective. McCormick also creates appropriate voices for the various other police officers and for the murder suspect. McCormick's narration has spunk and energy that will make listeners feel as if they're watching a television crime series. The range in her voice is entertaining, especially when she portrays colleagues who push Detective Foster's buttons. Listeners can count on a plot that keeps them guessing and a strong narration.”AudioFile Magazine

“Adroitly narrated by the vocal performance skills of Chante McCormick…especially and unreservedly recommended to the attention of dedicated mystery buffs.”Midwest Book Review

“Chicago-based novelist Clark (author of the “Cass Raines Chicago Mysteries”) excels again at creating a strong sense of setting: listeners will almost smell the back alleys and visualize the City Hall schemers seen on hours of security footage. Narrator Chante McCormick returns to narrate this sequel, providing solid voices for the characters, particularly those with Black Chicago accents. Recommend Clark's series to fans of police detective procedurals and domestic suspense.”Library Journal

The voices are not good

Most of this delivery is fine except the voices that aren’t foster. Why is Li, an Asian woman (and badass cop), given an infantilized baby voice? Very gross stereotype. Why are all the male characters vaguely southern sounding in the city of Chicago? The delivery of this distracts from the story.

Keeps you guessing

Most of the book was good and kept you guessing. The part about the anonymous blackmailer was unnecessary. It wasn’t even a cliffhanger it was dropped off without resolution. So many unnecessary things like running into the ex and not brought up again. He had no value in the story.

Action & Suspense Filled

I enjoyed the twists & turns in the story. I had a feeling of who the culprit might be, but had to wait for it all to unfold. I thought at first that the husband should be involved in the killings. To have had the husband more involved would have gone against his personality. The author handled it well the way she told the story. The narrator did a great job also!

Team Work

Yay for team work and working through the drama. Lonergan was a bit more likable in this installment. The case was an interesting one filled with crazy twists. Looks like the next book will be released in a year.

Good story but

I enjoyed the first book even though I didn’t care for the narrator. I didn’t like her male voices and didn’t like that some many voice inflections felt forced and stereotypical. While I did figure out how done it relatively early it was a fun read. Don’t know that I would listen to another with the same narrator

Harry is the best!

Tracy Clark has done it again! Another great whodunit featuring Harriet Foster. Excellent pacing, great red herring characters, and an ending I didn’t suspect until the last couple of chapters. I love Harry, she’s the best! Keep ‘em coming Ms. Clark.

Great Series, More Please

This has become one of favorite detective series. The chemistry between Harry and Li is great. The cases have been thrilling nailbiter. Book 2 was up in the air even after you knew who the killer was. I really enjoy listening to Chante McCormick adding life to each of the characters. Now let’s ride on and find out who’s making those phone calls!!

Mystery

I really enjoyed this book. I was clueless for quite some time but was able to figure it out before the plot twist which is what I strive for, I look forward to the next book.
