About this listen

After playing Online together for years, Jason and his friends are excited about the possibilities of the emerging technology of Full-Immersion Virtual Reality, aka FIVR. Preparing for the release of The World, Jason is determined to help his friends realize their dream of becoming pro gamers.

Choosing a 'Nightmare' start to get ahead of the wave of new players starting the game, Jason finds himself alone in the wild tasked with saving a group of refugees from goblin invaders. Although he manages to save the survivors, that's just the beginning of his trials as he desperately fights to bring them back from the edge of annihilation.

Jason is quickly swept up in the adventure as he struggles to build a home for his guildmates and the NPCs that he’s saved. As the trouble heats up, he quickly discovers that marauding goblins are the least of his concerns.

Warning: This is a LitRPG story and contains adult situations, foul language, MMORPG-style violence, and other fun things. Listen at your own risk.

LIT RPG Geek loves it!!

I listen to and read a ridiculous amount of LIT RPG, possibly my way of re-living my Everquest days. Despite the author's apparent love for WoW, I found this book FABULOUS. I notice that there are additional books in this series and I hope Audible adds them soon. Other reviewers have not cared for the narrator, but I found him engaging and easy to listen to. I am usually too lazy to write a review, so this book has obviously made a good impression on me :) Got SoW?

Refreshingly original

I was skeptical, but was pleasantly surprised. Jason Cheek came up with a brilliant way to have his LitRPG story coincide with present day and 'real life' - as opposed to other stories such as "The Land"... that keep the MC and the reader locked into the RPG world and you then lose the connection with what happened in real life.

I had never listened to a book narrated by Jason Hill before and with book 1, he did ok. As the series progresses he gets better and better.

The RPG story and the way the author found for the MC to blend things back to reality is perfect and it really adds a "hook, line and sinker" aspect to this story - at least it did for me.

I quickly purchased the next book...

Great story and narration

I enjoyed both the writing and narration of this story. I definitely appreciated that the main character is a professional player who is against PKers, who deliberately attack and spawn camp those weaker than them, just to grief them. This does not mean he isn't fine with PvP, in fact it sounds like he enjoys it, it is just that he does it for a challenge and not to pick on the weak. While I prefer PvE, I'm fine with PvP when it's honorable battle. Especially when a higher level character helps out newbies who are being griefed. :)

There is a tiny amount of settlement building, but not much. Hopefully, there will be a little more in the next book. Not too much, but you can tell having a solid base in the future will be needed.

Note: Some swearing and a few moments of sexual attraction, so not for kids.

Finally a really good LitRPG

I've listened to a lot of these LitRPGs (being a rabid gamer myself for over 40 years) and this is one of the few not written for a "young adult" audience. Other than a few irritating writing issues (which the editor should have caught), the book picks you up and throws you, along with the hero, into a hard-biting world of gritty battles and soul-wrenching tragedies.

One of the features I like is the clever way the author throws in gamer's lingo, without making it comprehensive to a non-gamer. I also like the hero's penchant for caring for the NPCs and taking their lives as perilously as other player-characters' lives.

I'm already into book 2, and loving that one, too. Hold onto your hats, lads, this is a roller-coaster of a trip.

Good intro to the series

Good intro to the series. However, the book is way too short. Most books in the fantasy fiction category will be somewhere between 14 and 20 hours long. This one only being eight hours is hard to justify the one credit to purchase. Should group multiple books into one purchase.

It got better then ended abruptly

The first hour had me debating whether I’d made a mistake buying the book. Then it got better. The rest of the book went very well, but it ended in the middle of an event as though someone arbitrarily decided to cut the book in half to make it into two books instead of one. I already purchased book two, if it does the same type of ending I will probably not get book three in the series.

I really dislike stopping a story in the middle to sell the next book. If you cannot write well enough without using gimmicks to sell the next book, you should consider a new career.

I gave the narrator 3 stars for mispronouncing a few words. It could be the author spelled the words the way the narrator read them. Overall he did an excellent job, but mispronounced words really breaks the flow of the story.
