Publisher's summary

The first book of a fun cozy mystery series - with a touch of supernatural.

Welcome to Holmestead, England - where an American ex-pat, an archaeologist, and murder turn this picture postcard village upside down.

Maggie Mulgrew runs The Ash Leaf, an antique shop in the quaint village of Holmestead, England - which has nothing to do with Sherlock, thank you very much. She sells her goods to disappointed tourists, and locals who appreciate her eclectic taste.

Professor Pembroke Martin is hunting down an artifact that had been stolen by a former assistant - a hand-blown apothecary jar that is the center of an old ghost story. His search leads him to Holmestead, and a stubborn, fascinating American who has acquired the box that once contained the rare jar.

When the missing jar turns up, clutched in the hand of the very dead local historian, Martin becomes the prime suspect. With his future on the line, Martin turns to Maggie for help, and they join forces to find the real killer.

A Ghost who dimmed lights

There are lots of characters right away which was a bit confusing. There seem to be many things happening immediately and the book moved along quickly. There was really not much from the ghost.

Superb cosy!

Excellent cosy mystery with good characterizations, fine imagery, and a solid plot with twists. But the ghost thing felt like a contrived add on required by the publisher. And the romantic aspect was fine until the end where it kind of felt like someone else patched it in. But don't let my irritation stop anyone from reading this enjoyable escape!
Lukas Arnold was the perfect choice for narrator with his smooth cadence and easy to listen to voice.

Skeptical listener

I can honestly say I have always had a hard time tuning into audio books. I drive an hour and half one way to work and wanted to try it again. I figured I was tired of the radio and needed to listen to something. The summary sounded interesting so I gave it a shot. I listened to the whole story. I started one morning; I got so into it I even on my lunch break went and ate lunch in my car because I wanted to find out what happened and then finished the book on my way back home that night. I really enjoyed it and have always loved a good mystery/ghost story. Ready to start another story for tomorrow’s drive.

Review

Took a while to get used to narrator. Got this audio book to listen to the book. I had read it years ago, but after reading Witch in the Dell and the mini stories I had to meet Maggie and Spencer and Prof. Martian and Holmestead again. Lovely. Dave Worsham. STILL NEED A MOVIEs of THESE PEOPLE AND THIS COUPLE.

Tinny

This story was really good but the tinniness of the performance really distracted from a good story.
