Publisher's summary

Read by the author.

A riveting look inside a life of poverty, success, and the inner circles of political influence—from the foothills of Appalachia all the way to the White House.

New York Times bestselling ghostwriter Nancy French is coming out of the shadows to tell her own incredible story.

Nancy's family hails from the foothills of the Appalachians, where life was dominated by coal mining, violence, abuse, and poverty. Longing for an adventure, she married a stranger, moved to New York, and dropped out of college. In spite of her lack of education, she found success as a ghostwriter for conservative political leaders. However, when she was unwilling to endorse an unsuitable president, her allies turned on her and she found herself spiritually adrift, politically confused, and occupationally unemployable.

Republicans mocked her, white nationalists targeted her, and her church community alienated her. But in spite of death threats, sexual humiliation, and political ostracization, she learned the importance of finding her own voice—and that the people she thought were her enemies could be her closest friends.

A poignant and engrossing memoir filled with humor and personal insights, Ghosted is a deeply American story of change, loss, and ultimately love.

I Had No Idea This Book Would Be This Good

I did not know what to expect. I purchased it on the recommendation of Russell Moore on his podcast. I do not regret that decision at all. Nancy French’s life is amazing. She had me laughing, crying and every emotion in between. I was inspired by reading her story. While our lives have been nothing alike we came to the same crossroads in 2016. I’m so glad she and others are willing to tell their stories. I don’t feel so alone. This is the best book I’ve read so far in 2024 and I hope and pray I’ll hear more from her for many years.

Honest, heartrendingly beautiful.

Nancy French is a true storyteller who has opened up her life story with honesty, openness, and humor even in the midst of trauma and pain. I couldn’t stop listening and didn’t want it to end.

Compellingly Ghosted!

I’ll be completely candid. I am a good friend of the author. I’ve read several of her previous books, and in my opinion Ghosted is by far her best. She is so open and honest about her best and worst of times… to the point of risking further judgement. I applaud her for peeling back the painful layers and taking the reader on a gut wrenchingly honest journey. I can imagine as a ghost writer, she sometimes takes efforts to protect her subject’s feelings. But in telling her own tale, she openly admits her faults and doesn’t try to sugar coat her bad decisions. I appreciate that while she candidly talks about the hypocrisy of many conservatives and Christians, she still adheres to her beliefs. She and I differ on many political and spiritual views. While I’m a leftist Democrat atheist, she’s a conservative Christian, But she lives out what she claims; to listen, learn, and appreciate the differences of those who are not just like her.
I constantly listen to memoirs. I’m typically a pretty harsh critique, and have bailed on several books when I don’t feel the author is being authentic. I’ve also quit on a few Audible books because the narrators were annoying. But I couldn’t turn Ghosted off. I loved Nancy’s narration and found myself greatly irritated whenever I was interrupted. I anxiously returned to it as soon as I possibly could. That is a rare occurrence, when you find a book you ‘can’t put down’. So while I admit I know her personally, I assure you, this critique is coming from a book snob. I loved Ghosted! I hope it makes people THINK! I hope it makes conservatives self evaluate and decide to be as courageous as Nancy and her family have been in the face of so much criticism and hatefulness. I already loved her… but after learning so many things about her and her story that I never knew, I love her even more! Read Ghosted!!!

The Best 9 hours and 57 minutes…

From start to finish … I am so happy that I happen to listen to a Russell Moore podcast and heard of Nancy French for the first time! Her voice was easy on my ears and I just had to hear what she had to say about her dislike for Trump and being a Christian! But she had much more to say and I was captivated. Chapter after chapter… time flew by and her story ended my listening session with a tear and a smile. Thank you God for my new friend!! Her amazing story will touch hearts and help transpose lives.
