Publisher's summary

Grace Moore doesn't think her life can get any more complicated. After all, she's already an operative for an organization of underground magic-users known as the Grove. Hated by the public and hunted by police because of their magic, Grace knows she'll be imprisoned or executed if anyone on the outside discovers her real job.

With her impulsive nature and zany fashion sense, she has her hands full just keeping under the radar. And that's before something mysteriously kills all the members at the organization's Spokane headquarters.

Chosen, in her opinion, as an expendable way for her superiors to save face with other Grove branches, Grace sets out to find who or what could kill a group of people even more talented than herself. She'd much rather be home, eating a steaming plate of four-star Phad Thai with a dusty tome of rune descriptions open in front of her. Instead she's in over her head and alone on the scene of the most public hit against the Grove system in generations.

If Grace has any chance of completing her mission and living through this, she must team up with Robert Lorents - a powerfully talented but untrained and untrusting foster kid with a genius for trouble. That's assuming, of course, she can convince Robert she's not evil, evade the police investigation, and come up with a plan before she and Robert become the next victims.

Fun magical adventure & local love letter

This is a fun dual narrated story that I highly recommend. First of a trilogy with neat world building for an alternate Earth with a flavor all its own and a local love letter to the inland northwest that tickles me to hear. The writing is clean and witty and the performance is engaged and easy to listen to. Very occasionally a word is mispronounced which can be a little jarring but she's really pretty smooth. Do recommend.

EXCELLENT READ!

I really enjoyed it! This book caught my attention from the very beginning and held it throughout the entire book. This book has it all (action, adventure, drama, suspense and magic. The narration was great. These authors did an excellent job with the character builds and plot. This was my first book by this author but definitely not my last! I look forward to reading more books from these authors! I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Narration hurt this one

I had a difficult time getting into this book. The narrator spoke well and clearly, however, she had difficulty with inflection and was hard to follow changes in characters. Not a horrible book, just not for me.

I want more!

I really liked the main characters of this book. The book moves fast and has a lot of action. Grace Under Fire is great start for a new series. Unfortunately Evelyn Marcail made this a difficult book to listen to. Evelyn voice is clear and her tone is good but she doesn't change her inflection at all. I keep getting lost on who is saying what because ever character sounded the same. I hope Coup De Grace comes out on Audible with a new narrator. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Magical and suspenseful!

Great book loved the magic in modern times. Great suspenseful moments and the narrator drew me right into the story.

Meh

I'm not sure if this is book one or book two in this series (the description above says book two but when you look for the series, it ID's this as book one) but it doesn't matter, I'm one and done.

It was a decent enough story for the genre but since it's told from duo male and female POV's, it needed two different narrators, or at least one that had distinct male and female persona. (There were a few times when I didn't always know if the male or female was speaking.) Marcall also made some production errors which kept me from settling into this book.

The story had a great tempo with our two hero's getting into and out of scrapes in their efforts to save Seattle. It's not enough to make me continue though.
