Questo episodio si concentra prevalentemente sulla storica battaglia di Borodino, a ovest di Mosca, fra l'esercito francese e quello russo, e sul vagabondare di Pierre Bezuchov sul campo di battaglia. Inizia con il bombardamento della città di Smolensk da parte dei francesi. Qui arriva Alpatyc, l'attendente del vecchio principe Bolkonskij, per raccogliere informazioni sulla necessità di evacuare Lysyia Gory; egli incontra il principe Andrej che raccomanda alla sorella e al padre di lasciare la proprietà e di portarsi verso Mosca perché Smolensk è ormai perduta.
A Boguciarovo i Bolkonskij trovano la resistenza dei servi e dei contadini che non vogliono lasciare la loro terra per andare a Mosca. Il vecchio Principe Nicolaj in un impeto d'ira è colto da un infarto che in pochi giorni lo porterà alla morte. Nel frattempo Napoleone e il suo esercito si avvicinano a Boguciarovo ma Nicolaj Rostov, che si trova nei pressi, riesce a far fuggire Marja Bolkonskaja a Mosca. Marja si sente improvvisamente innamorata di Nicolaj, che seppur legato a Sonja, nel suo intimo la ricambia. Napoleone con le sue truppe è intanto arrivato alle porte di Mosca e si prepara per la grande battaglia e la conquista della città santa dei russi. Pierre, in una Mosca che vede gli abitanti fuggire, di fronte ai patetici spettacoli di esecuzioni capitali di possibili spie francesi, decide di vedere e partecipare personalmente alla carneficina che si prepara sul campo di Borodino. Qui Tolstoj si sofferma alquanto sulla critica delle strategie militari di russi e francesi. In pratica sostiene che entrambi hanno commesso dei fatali errori politici e avrebbero potuto evitare la battaglia.
Nella cruentissima battaglia che avviene a Borodino il reggimento del principe Andrej viene quasi del tutto annientato e il principe stesso è ferito gravemente. Nell'ospedale da campo in cui viene portato vede accanto a sé Anatole Kuraghin che ha perso una gamba. Mosso dal dolore del rivale, Andrej lo perdona. L'infuriare della guerra viene descritto da Tostoj nei minuti dettagli ma quasi sempre dal punto di vista di Pierre e della sua umanità. Alla fine, sul campo di battaglia, giacciono i corpi di migliaia di soldati morti o feriti e Tolstoj argomenta che nessuno dei due contendenti potrà mai pretendere una superiorità morale, e che la vittoria dei francesi si dimostrerà una "vittoria di Pirro".
