About this listen

Stress is not in your head, it’s in your body—this is the key to peak performance that Leah Lagos, PsyD, BCB, an internationally known expert in biofeedback and sport and performance psychology, wants us to know. In this audiobook, she shares with listeners for the first time the same program that she uses with top athletes, CEOs, business leaders—anyone who wants and needs to perform at their best.

What makes her scientifically proven 10-week program unlike any other is that she recognizes the link between heart rhythms and stress to create specific, clinically tested exercises and breathing techniques that allow you to control your body’s physical response to stress. She pairs this training with cognitive-behavioral exercises to offer a two-tiered process for strengthening health and performance, enabling listeners to respond more flexibly to stressful situations, let go of negative thoughts and emotions, and ultimately be more focused and confident under pressure.

Essential Breath Theory

I enjoyed learning why my existing breath practice works to align heart and mind. There was one new point I hadn't known and for that I'm grateful to have read this with my book club.

Great book, terrible narration

This is a really good book, and I intend to read it again on paper. The book is narrated by the author and it's really poorly narrated. She continually emphasizes the wrong syllables, which makes her sound like she's not an English speaker, which she clearly is. I suspect that she's reading the book syllable-by-syllable and emphasizing syllables not based on whole phrases or sentences, but in some kind of pattern to make it sound conversational. The problem is that nobody talks like that, and most people don't read out loud like that; I've never heard a professional narrator read like this; it doesn't make any sense. By the end of the book, I was counting down the minutes to its end. I wanted to consume the book, but the continual mis-emphases were driving me crazy. I was practicing 4/6 breathing to get through the ordeal. Leah, please will you agree to have a professional narrator read your awesome book?

Great audiobook (obtained PDF later)

While the book has great practical exercises, and I have benefited personally from much of the advice, it would have been great to have the referenced PDF document included. Otherwise, I would comment only that the book is great.

EDIT: I have now received the PDF and I will admit that it is very convenient for performing the exercises, although the exercises can be done without the “Homework Tracking Notes.” I still found the exercises to be quite beneficial. Great book.

A true heart based approach to stress

I’ve long been intrigued by HRV and its connection to health and well-being. Leah Lagos gives us a map to effective and meaningful change. My biggest challenge is accessing toe measuring equipment in a convenient form to adapt in every day life.

A book when an essay would do

Unnecessary repetitions, anecdotes and details- just to make it into a book, it feels like.
It’s useful and important concept but a booklet would have been okay.

Undefined words

i dont know what things like "focus on your heart" means. What am i suposed to focus on? Or what does "clear your heart" mean? How does one "clear" it?

I also have low trust for some "evidence" used in some cases. Anecdotal evidence, while important, can be misenterpered. And if a study supports a claim, that does not automatically mean its true. I was left sceptical.

Basically “Unlistenable” get the regular book instead

The author reads the book in such a slow saccharine sing-song voice that it’s basically impossible to listen to. It sounds like they are talking to a child. I have no complaints about the content of the book! I bought the paperback as well.
