Audie Award Finalist, Solo Narration - Female, 2014

Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

Seven months into her pregnancy, Rachel Samstat discovers that her husband, Mark, is in love with another woman. The fact that the other woman has "a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb and you should see her legs" is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel writes cookbooks for a living. And in between trying to win Mark back and loudly wishing him dead, Ephron's irrepressible heroine offers some of her favorite recipes. Heartburn is a sinfully delicious novel, as soul-satisfying as mashed potatoes and as airy as a perfect soufflé.

Critic reviews

"Great fun. . . . Though Heartburn bristles ferociously with wit, it's not lacking in soul." ( The New York Times Book Review)
"Nora Ephron's first novel is warm, witty and wise." ( Harper's Bazaar)

Still relevant in 2021

I’m 34, reading this for the first time in 2021. It’s absolutely wonderful. A laugh out loud and smile to yourself kind of book. Thanks Nora.

So fun!

On the surface, the plot should be boring and yet it is utterly delightful and slightly zany. The narration by the one and only Meryl Streep is of course perfect.

Heartwarming and honest

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! It was funny, honest, warm & friendly.

Any additional comments?

I would not necessarily have gone for this had it not been for Meryl Streep's narration, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended.

Essential for breakups

Much-needed levity for anyone going through a divorce or breakup. Yes, there are some problematic words and themes, but overall this is an irreverent perspective on one of life’s most painful truths: nothing lasts forever.

Wonderfully read by Meryl Streep

This is a perfect match - Meryl Streep makes Nora Ephron even funnier. I laughed out loud several times and really enjoyed this book. There are wonderful recipes incorporated nicely in the story as well.

Doesn't quite work

Can't believe I'm saying this, because I worship Meryl Streep and generally think she can do no wrong, and was looking forward to listening to her read this classic from Nora Ephron, but... she is miscast here - the wrong voice for the job.

A Fun, Entertaining Listen

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but it had such great reviews, I had to try it. I found it to be a quick, easy, enjoyable listen. I listened to it on my commute to and from work and was entertained the entire time. The story kind of reads as a glimpse into the main character's life--the interesting people in her Washington D.C. circle, her strange family, her career, and her marriage.
I recommend it for those looking for an entertaining, lighthearted read.
Also, I love that Meryl Streep is the narrator--she is so much fun to listen to.
