Secret societies and civil war....

After Alshari Court Wizard Pentandra survives her third assassination attempt in the Tower of Sorcery, she sends her deputy, Sir Rondal, to investigate the mysterious origins of the attempt while she contends with Alshari court politics. Matters come to a head when he and Kitten rescue an old woman and her grandson from certain death...only to discover she is the lost hedgewitch who gave Pentandra a book of secret prophecies about the future.

The tension rising in southern Alshar seems to break when the Duke and Duchess announce the relocation of the court to the summer capital of Vorone for a season. Pentandra intends to relax and manage her lands for the summer, safely away from assassins and undead. But her friend and liege, Minalan the Spellmonger, announces that he’s taking the summer off, too, dumping the responsibilities for leadership on her overburdened shoulders while he journeys on an expedition of exploration. What could possibly go awry?

Within days of the Spellmonger leaving, the Kingdom is plunged into a civil war between the knights of the kingdom, led by Prince Tavard, and the nascent power of the magi, led by Viscount Terleman. As the battles play out in rapid-fire fashion across Gilmora and the Wilderlands, Pentandra increasingly finds herself losing control of the situation. Not even the return of the Spellmonger from his expedition could be much help, as he has changed in ways that disturb both Pentandra and Ronda....

The only hope for relief and the future of the kingdom now seems to lie in the wrinkled hands of a very old, very wise hedgewitch!

This is getting even better!

Covering the times handled in books 12 & 13 but from other perspectives. Those being Rondal’s and Pentandra’s. Hedgewitch goes on just a bit from where FootWizard left off. The overall story is just getting better and I for one can’t wait to see where this goes.

The Masterpiece continues...

The spellmonger series is still my absolute favorite to date. I have to admit, I rated this book slightly lower than most of the others, mostly because it's a bit shorter and if you're following the rest of the books to this point, then most of the events within are largely predictable and are the next logical step in the story, which is still fun, but the book following this one will put me back into unknown territory, whereas the events unfolding in Footwizard and Hedgewitch had a lot of clues leading up to them and so were not a total surprise.

John Lee is truly a "Golden" voice narrator, an absolute joy to listen to, and I really love his voice & superb narration, but quite peculiarly he has switched up the pronunciation of several of the characters names from one book to another, and I'm not sure why, but there has been some mispronunciation or possibly some misspellings in the script he was given, in this case "Princess Amendra" was changed to "Princess Almendra" or something, and in the past it's happened with other characters (Count Sago-Count Salgo, Sir Riff-Sir Ryff, King Kameclaven-King Kameleven, and 1-2 others). As an uber-fan it's hard not to notice. It's a minor detail but it's one that I wish they would've attended to a little better because we all strive for perfection in the end, and he's such a fantastic narrator, it's a shame to have that type of detail as a detractor.

I'm always and forever going to be a Spellmonger fan and I can't wait to see how the series wraps up, but we still have a ways to go in this journey before that happens, I'm sure. Thank you Terry & John for the wonderful hours of entertainment!
