About this listen

Scotland, 1812. He's ferocious and rugged to the bone, an English soldier more at home on the battlefield than in any society drawing room. And when Major Gabriel Forrester learns that he has inherited the massive Scottish Highlands title and estate of a distant relation, the last thing he wants to do is give up the intensity of the battlefield for the too-soft indulgences of noble life. But Gabriel Forrester does not shirk his responsibilities, and when he meets striking, raven-eyed lass Fiona Blackstock, his new circumstances abruptly become more intriguing.

Like any good Highlander, Fiona despises the English - and the new Duke of Lattimer is no exception. Firstly, he is far too attractive for Fiona's peace of mind. Secondly, his right to "her" castle is a travesty, since it's been clan Maxwell property for ages.

As the two enter a heated battle of wills, an unexpected passion blazes into a love as fierce as the Highlands themselves. Is Fiona strong enough to resist her enemy's advances - or is Gabriel actually her hero in disguise?

I truly enjoyed this book, the characters were great together and the narrator did a great job keeping you interested and with the dialects

Loved it.

Loved it! Especially the way the main female character is written. For once we are spared the hypocrisy of a virginal heroine. Love the narrator.

Love all of Suzanne Enoch's books...

But those narrated by Flora MacDonald are fantastic!! I loved Gabriel's voice and it was very distinct. Excellent job!

Mediiocre

Narration was good but the romance was light on initial tension and resistance and the dialogue was unimaginative. I did not believe there was intense love. The telling instead of showing felt a bit lazy - too much internal monologue used to reveal character. I wanted to love the "good" characters more and "hate" the bad guys more. I just didn't FEEL as much as I would have liked.

Quick Thoughts: This book was really hard for me to rate! There were parts I really loved and other parts I had a hard time wrapping my head around. Actually there was one moment and it was the first time it got smexy. I didn't care a wit about how sexually free she was but I did notice that he just kind of assumed it. That bothered me a gosh darn bit. I loved them otherwise and they both showed tremendous growth during the story. Their romance was perfect (for them) and in the end I was left wanting more (I already have book 2 which I am told I will adore like mad). So yes I recommend this!

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated by: Flora MacDonald / Length: 11 hrs and 17 mins

This is (as far as I know unless this is an alias) the first Flora MacDonald narration I have listened too. I was impressed. In fact, she might have been a wee bit too good on the narration because there were a couple of times I had to rewind to catch her Scottish Brogue. Her male voices weren't bad at all and I will totally continue this series in audio!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Hero in the Highlands?

They hit the ground running in their first meeting with the cow stuck in the mud.. Too funny!

What does Flora MacDonald bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Flora is smart but straight forward and brings a fresh outlook to our jaded H
