Den Hilde Wangel, vi først møder i Klas Östergrens nye roman, virker til at leve et meget kontrolleret og sundt liv. Hun arbejder på et rejsebureau i Berlin, som arbejder for at få tyskerne til at holde ferie i de norske fjelde, og hun lever fuldt op til de æblekindede turistplakater. Så hvorfor hjemsøges hun pludselig af angstanfald? I sin nød henvender hun sig til en nervelæge, som henviser hende til den nye tids psykoanalytiker, og her begynder hun at fortælle: om moderens død, om stedmoderens mærkelige mørke sider og længsel mod havet, om den bygmester hun beundrede som trængte hende op i et hjørne, da hun bare var en pige, om hvordan hun langt senere opsøgte ham, lokkede ham og styrtede ham i fordærv.
Alt er på mærkelig vis sammenfattet i et engelsk stel, et tilsyneladende uskyldigt landligt motiv i blåhvidt porcelæn, hvor hyrden og hyrdinden i fadets midte synes involveret i noget meget mere skummelt, end først antaget.
