Publisher's summary
Having played the pivotal role of Mr. Spock in the original series, in six motion pictures, and in a special two-part episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as having directed two of the movies, Nimoy is well suited to tell the true story behind what was seen by the public. He provides an intelligent and insightful book about the creative process and the actor's craft - and gives his own unique insider's view of the creation of both the character, Mr. Spock, and the Star Trek phenomenon.

Story
In a gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, 2016, the shooter, Omar Mateen, murdered 49 people and wounded 53 others. The attack was the deadliest act of violence against the LGBTQ+ community in US history and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since 9/11. But there’s a story you haven’t heard. The FBI had a secret history with the shooter and his father. To obscure that history, the FBI pushed a false story that the media dutifully carried—that the attacker was a secretly gay Islamist extremist who had chosen to target Pulse and planned the attack for weeks.

Story
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Living with Dad was like living with a stranger—as a kid I often had trouble connecting and relating to him. But I was always proud of him. Even before Star Trek, I’d see him popping up in bit roles on some of my favorite TV shows like Get Smart, Sea Hunt, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. And then one night he brought home Polaroids of himself in makeup and wardrobe for a pilot he was working on. It was December 1964 and nobody had heard of Star Trek. Still, the eight-year-old me had watched enough Outer Limits and My Favorite Martian to understand exactly what I was looking at.

Nimoy's memoirs: filming & aftermath of Star Trek
This was a really interesting and entertaining memoir written & narrated by Leonard Nimoy, Mr. Spock himself. He discusses his career before Star Trek, how he got the part for Mr. Spock, and what it was like to actually film for the groundbreaking TV show. There are so many great anecdotes, such as how they decided on Spock's particular pointed ears, and how they developed his character over time. Nimoy really stresses how collaborative a process the script & character development for Spock was, and how the show really fell apart after Gene Roddenberry left.
I would recommend this to any Trekkie and Nimoy fan, even if you are more familiar with the Star Trek 2009 movie or haven't watched all of the Original Series. I have not watched every episode, but I am a great fan of the Star Trek franchise and thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the man behind the ears.
I did not give this 5 stars because it only covers the Trekkie timeline up to Next Generation. There is no discussion about Nimoy's experience about coming back for the 2009 Star Trek movie, or his cameo's as Spock in the TV show The Big Bang Theory. It is so sad we will not get a full picture of what that time in his life was like, now that Nimoy has passed away. I guess fans will need to look at interviews etc. Nimoy did around the time those more recent installments were released.

Fascinating.....
I wish Spock, Kirk, and Bones Could have written and auto biography together and shared some of their inner dialog. That would have been an excellent read. However, I am very pleased with this and I am glad I gave it a chance.
Too bad about what Star Trek: Discovery did with his character. I choose to ignore it in the timeline.

Essential for all Nimoy fans
Listening to this in Nimoy's own voice brought bittersweet tears to my eyes. It was like having a long, wide-ranging *schmooze* with a long lost and very dear friend.
Admittedly, after listening to Shatner's more recent paean to their half-century friendship, "Leonard," I expected a certain amount of overlap in the stories. But it was an absolutely delightful bit of serendipity that Nimoy's versions of those stories made it seem like he was saying with a gleeful sparkle in his eye and an iconic lift of one brow, "Yeah, that's Bill's version of events. Now let me tell you what *really* happened."
And speaking of that iconic brow lift, one of the best things about having the audio version of this book is the acerbic and wickedly dry humorous byplay between Nimoy and his "inner Spock." I'm sure psych professionals everywhere would have a field day with those sections of the narrative, but for the rest of us, they comprise the best parts! Hasn't any Star Trek fan, nomatter how casual their interest in the show, wondered what Spock might have thought about the actor who not only portrayed him, but in many ways (as this book lays out) created the character's incredibly detailed background story from his own rich cultural heritage and personal history.
If you ever enjoyed the original Star Trek, or Mission Impossible's inimitable Paris, or any of the other myriad characters Nimoy brought to life, you definitely want this Audible book.

Spock he is!
Is must read or listen for any Star Trek fan. Nimoy himself narrates to you, as a long time friend the history of how Spock came to be and he coped with it. Also there are some wonderful tells about the series and movies you provably don't know.
Also it felt really good to hear his voice now that he passed.

Spock Lives
I wish I could have met Mr. Nimoy before his passing. What a brilliant individual.
Anyway, this book is about him and his time playing the character of Spock. It's both well written and performed.
Highly recommend.

A wonderful reflection by one of sci-fi TV's greats
"I Am Spock" is a beautiful recollection of Leonard Nimoy's time with Star Trek, with brief commentary on his other directorial work. It's truly fascinating (pun entirely intended) to hear his perspective of the history of the franchise. I only wish there was an unabridged version of this book. Only Nimoy's iconic voice can do his words justice.

Loved it
What did you love best about I Am Spock?
I read his before book "I am Not Spock". Unlike most, I understood that it was a book to show the difference from the actor and the character, and it was a great book. I purchased this book to listen to on my drive into and back from work...and I could not have had a better experience. To listen to Mr. Nimoy speak in his own words about his experiences, made it all too real, and gave me great respect for him. I highly rcommend this book to anyone.

Fascinating
"I Am Spock" provides the listener of a broad overview of life of Leonard Nimoy. At first, it's jolting when the Nimoy, the narrator, converses with his alter-ego, Spock. However, over the course of the book, it provides a unique look at an actor and a character the former portrays.
Also, the book looks at Nimoy's involvement with Star Trek, from the studio negotiations to portraying Spock to directing Star Treks III and IV. It's great to learn of his perspective of these moments that helped form the Star Trek universe, especially his take on the climax of Star Trek II: The Search for Spock.
This is my first autobiography to purchase from Audible and was not disappointed. I recommend for Nimoy and Star Trek fans alike!
