About this listen

Winner of the 2024 Audie Award for Autobiography/Memoir

THE NEW YORK TIMES AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER

The renowned and bestselling memoir—written with “insight, truth, and passion” (Sir Ian McKellen)—from iconic, beloved actor and living legend Sir Patrick Stewart.

From his acclaimed stage triumphs to his legendary onscreen work, Sir Patrick Stewart has captivated audiences around the world and across multiple generations in a career spanning six decades with his indelible command of stage and screen. No other British working actor enjoys such career variety, universal respect, and unending popularity, as witnessed through his seminal roles—whether as Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek fame, Professor Charles Xavier of Marvel's X-Men hit movie franchise, his more than forty years as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company, his unforgettable one-man show adapted from Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, or his comedic work in American Dad!, Ted, Extras, and Blunt Talk, among many others. Now, he presents his stunning memoir, a revealing portrait of a driven artist whose astonishing life—from his humble beginnings in Yorkshire, England, to the heights of Hollywood and worldwide acclaim—proves a story as exuberant, definitive, and enduring as the author himself.

Critic reviews

“I read this book in a state of wonder, not just for the author’s gifts as a nuanced storyteller and sharp observer, but for those other remarkable gifts, of intelligence, sensitivity, wit, intuition, self-awareness, and élan that were bestowed on him when he came into the world—all of which he has freely shared with us so long and so beautifully; and finished reading in a state of deep gratitude for the gifts, and the gift, of Patrick Stewart.” —Michael Chabon

“Patrick’s early life is a Dickensian tale of domestic violence and misfortune, transformed by chance and some good folk into the actor internationally admired and loved. He writes as well as he acts, with insight, truth, and passion. Another Stewart Triumph!” —Sir Ian McKellen

“There is so much to say about Sir Patrick. He is an amazing actor, great to look at, really funny, and up for anything. He is a kind man…compassionate and sensitive….but, as you will find when you read the book, his greatest asset as a human being is the fact that he is so completely and unapologetically himself.” —Whoopi Goldberg

Engage. 10/10

Patrick Stewart recalling his life and career while reading his own memoir, speaking with the eloquence of the Shakespearean actor he happens to be? Could listen forever. Long live Captain Picard. Listen and make it so.

Beautifully Done!

A wonderful narration of his personal life and career.

The details of his childhood, education, and career are amazing. And, he gives us the bad decisions he has made along with the good.

Hearing him narrate made it all the more personable.

Awesome book

Frankly it was worth the price to hear Patrick Stewart talk for 18 hours, but it turns out that he’s a great storyteller. He feels very honest and open, like he’s talking to a friend. I highly recommend this book.

A wonderful memoir and a fantastic listening experience.

I’ve been in love with Star Trek since the 1960’s. But I became even more besotted when The Next Generation came out. Imagine my delight when this book hit my inbox. Yes, I listened to the audiobook because Patrick narrated with his fabulous voice. What I didn’t expect was to be transported back in time to England’s pre- and post WWII Yorkshire. I didn’t know Patrick was a northern boy born two years after my mother. He came from very humble beginnings just like John, Paul, George and Ringo. Yes, the Beatles and their music are the soundtrack to my life. And all versions of Star Trek were my hopes for a kinder, gentler future for humankind.

I loved Patrick’s tales of his family, schooling, career, and all the wonderful people he loved…and one he feared. No life is perfect. And Patrick owns up to a couple of blunders he made with his eyes wide open. Overall, he is a likable, talented character and storyteller. Regrets? Yes, he has a few, but he has done a splendid job of staying positive with much love in his heart. This book includes a few stories of things that made him angry. But he reports these occurrences as an inconvenience…this is not a vicious tell-all.

I’m glad I got to read it while he is still alive and living his best life with wife Sunny. I highly recommend this man’s life story.

Heartwarming and endearing

I grew up with Next Generation as my Star Trek, being a youth when it premiered in 1987. I've admired Sir Pat Stew ever since, and have enjoyed him in many films and other performances. This book is everything I hoped it would be, and more. I laughed, wept, cheered, and enjoyed every minute of this reading. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.

He talks to you, not reads.

I got so teary eyed nostalgic, listening as if he were talking to just me. Like it was my own grandfather story telling about the crazy things he did as a kid.

Sir Patrick Stewart tells a good story…

…, as you might expect. His wonderful narration makes listening to his memoir even more intimate.
I could relate to his love of American movies he saw at the Cinema while growing up. I got to see British TV dramas for the first time thanks to the newly created Public Television looking across the pond in Britain for content. I was hooked for life, especially the historical dramas like “I Claudius”. It was a treat to hear Sir Patrick Stewart tell his own story of how he went from a small town in the North of England, to the Royal Shakespeare Company to a Paramount sound stage where StarTrek TNG, the movies and Picard were filmed.
