Publisher's summary
Something terrible has happened in the snowbound village of Kingdom Come, Wyoming, where 12 eerily identical houses stand dark and abandoned. Meals remain untouched on dining room tables, cars are still in garages, and the town's residents have vanished into thin air. This is the disturbing setting where vacationing medical examiner Maura Isles and her traveling companions find themselves trapped during a ferocious snowstorm. Thinking they've found a safe haven, they soon realize that they are not alone in the valley....someone is watching.
After one of their party is injured, Maura sets out to find help. But just as she leaves the village, she is attacked and dragged into the woods. A blow falls and the world goes black. Searching for her friend and colleague, police detective Jane Rizzoli's investigation leads her to the abandoned valley and a gruesome discovery. But it turns out Maura's not dead--she's on the run, forced to place her life in the hands of the unlikely savior who has kept her alive until now: a 16-year-old boy.

She's young. She's beautiful. And her corpse, laid out in the office of Boston medical examiner Cat Novak, betrays no secrets - except for a notebook clutched in one stiff hand, seven numbers scrawled inside. When a second victim is discovered, Cat begins to fear that a serial killer is stalking the city streets: a shadowy madman without mercy or apparent motive. The police are sceptical. The mayor won't listen. And Cat's chief suspect is one of the city's most prominent citizens.

Story
The living dead are more alive than ever! Zombies have become more than an iconic monster for the 21st century: They are now a phenomenon constantly revealing as much about ourselves - and our fascination with death, resurrection, and survival - as our love for the supernatural or post-apocalyptic speculation. Our most imaginative literary minds have been devoured by these incredible creatures and produced exciting, insightful, and unflinching new works of zombie fiction.

Story
When police chief Nathan Slaughter settles in the tiny mountain community of Potter’s Field, Wyoming, his most fervent prayer is that he has left behind him forever the nightmare he barely survived on a blizzardy night in Detroit. But nothing prepares him for the greater sanity-threatening nightmare he is about to confront. Beginning with the discovery of mutilated cattle on outlying ranches, Slaughter is drawn deeper and deeper into a vortex of terror as animals become savage and children go insane, trapping the entire town in a frenzy of violence. As Slaughter races against time to expose the horrifying secret behind the increasingly savage attacks, he also struggles to overcome his deepest fears.

The response from some of the best writers on the planet: Game on! The result: Eleven stories that are twisty, scary, surprising and bursting with imagination. Disappointing
I had never read this author before and wanted to like it. Unfortunately I did not. I found the story uninteresting with no depth. I listened to it all the way through and thought it was written at a teenage level. It was definitely not literature. I know I'm not in the majority, but I thought it was a waste of time.

Ok story
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Story was ok but I had a hard time with this narrator. I think it would have been better if I read this one myself instead of listening.
How could the performance have been better?
By using a different narrator. This one was very bland and didn't add anything to the storytelling.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Sure

Each book brings Great Characters
Bought for Myself
Overall Rating 3.5
Story Rating 3.25
Character Rating 3.75
Audio Rating 3.5
NOTE: I love the Rizzoli and Isles series from Tess Gerritsen. Each book brings a really good thriller and usually some really great character development. I would recommend this series to anyone who reads Mystery/Thrillers!
What I Loved: The case in Ice Cold was not straight-forward nor was it easy to figure out. There are some very chilling moments that will make the hair on the back of your head stand up. I really enjoyed Rizzoli in this book, also. It was fun watching her balance all her new roles (don't want to give anything away if you are behind in the series) along with being a great cop. As always, the friendship that she and Maura has shines through everything even when they are disagreeing.
What I Liked: The secondary characters really made Ice Cold shine! The characters were complicated, interesting, unexpected, and their fates weren't what I was expecting. I can't really be more specific without giving things away but trust me, these characters were all interesting.
Complaints: The first half of this book really crawled for me but was not badly done. There was a lot of character plotting and not enough case for my preference.
Audio Review: Narrated by Tanya Eby who I think did an excellent job. She had really good pacing, accentuation, and emotion.
Why I gave it a 3.5: I really enjoyed this book overall and thought it was a good addition to the series. I am really looking forward to Silent Girl!

Ice cold leaves you chilled to the bone!!!
After watching the "Rizzoli and Isles" TV show, I was eager to get listening to this book.
I couldn't stop listening, and spent all weekend multitasking, putting up the Christmas lights, fixing up the new chairs I put together and wrapping presents just listening to this book. I finally finished it yesterday evening. When can we expect more!!!!!
I don't want to give anything away, but the way that this was written leaves you wanting much more of Ms. Gerritsen's dynamic duo.

As a thriller, it was almost 'ice cold'
This book really lacked a cohesive plot. The unavailable priest who was the tortured but unavailable love interest of the doctor was such a dramatic part of the story at the start that I wondered why his character just disappeared. There was a lot of driving around in bad weather, mountain lore, and 'chick-lit' jealousy between women -- but the storyline itself did not really have a 'hook'. I would recommend this book as a mild distraction, but not as a riveting listen.

Good not great
I thought the story was good but some of the transitions were incongruous with the rest of the story. Some places were slow and drawn out but it flowed relatively well. I think that the final link to previous stories were a bit inconsistent and may throw of the listener. Otherwise is was good.
