About this listen

A USA TODAY bestseller

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Last Unicorn comes a new novel with equal amounts of power and whimsy in which a loveable cast of characters trapped within their roles of dragon hunter, princess, and more must come together to take their fates into their own hands.

Dragons are common in the backwater kingdom of Bellemontagne, coming in sizes from mouse-like vermin all the way up to castle-smashing monsters. Gaius Aurelius Constantine Heliogabalus Thrax (who would much rather people call him Robert) has recently inherited his deceased dad’s job as a dragon catcher/exterminator, a career he detests with all his heart in part because he likes dragons, feeling a kinship with them, but mainly because his dream has always been the impossible one of transcending his humble origin to someday become a prince’s valet. Needless to say, fate has something rather different in mind…

A new twist on Dragons

This is a lovely medieval tale of two young men and a princess. Not so much a coming of age deal. Instead it is about class lines and their limitations.
The then there are the dragons themselves. Dragons are not all the huge kind... the Kings. Instead dragons start off small then grow all their lifes if they live through all the constant fighting amongst their kind. Only the best and the strongest survive all the perils.
It is a very logical and sweetly enticing tale. Well written and narrated. One for the collection!

Funny and delightful

This is another wonderful fantasy from a master author. There are ferocious dragons, an evil wizard, a reluctant hero, snd a strong minded princess who provide an entertaining romp through a medieval style adventure.

A fun read, and slightly frustrating listen.

I don't want to be harsh or scathing, as we are all learning and improving day by day. However, this title was performed in a way in which I might assume one who isn't fluent in reading aloud might go about it.
The author uses an abundance of flowery, descriptive language throughout, but the delivery is halting and awkward in a good majority of the story throughout which mispronunciations are sprinkled (Had to pause when I heard a unique pronunciation of "ebon".)
There are moments where it seems like a line of text ended mid-sentence and the reader paused and restarted at the next line rather than looking ahead and finishing the thought in one breath.
For most things this was incredibly distracting, but I must admit that it always made me smile when a certain crown prince had any dialogue - the unsure manner of speaking was spectacularly fitting to his character and very entertaining.
All in all a nice listen if you enjoy the author's works and/or dragons as I do. I never write reviews, but I felt compelled to report the aspects of this performance that made my eye twitch!

I liked it

the premis was interesting but the story felt insubstantial. overly detailed when not required and not enough detail in places leading to some minor disorientation. there are some good bones there that could be built on to really flesh out a very intriguing world.

A very good story!

The reader had a very odd style, and it made it less enjoyable to listen to.

New Ideas Incorporated Into A Timeless Story

I loved the premise of this story. I did see some reviews about the characters having too much angst. I didn't see that as a problem, and the thoughts of the main characters were very believable. The events were realistic in how they were explained. The fantasy was made as a real possibility.

The reading was not my favorite, but in my experience with Audible, they don't really have a huge selection of readers that I have enjoyed in the first place.

Dragon are pests and the city is to be saved by an exterminator

The story had me abit confused but could be over thinking it. As the story itself is fairly simple I found it disappointing when the villain was revealed compared and their goal compared to what was hinted at. The characters are a little frustrating and hard headed. For a bit there also was debating quitting the story as it was just dragging in but for a decent reason.

*SPOILER SECTION*

So the green dragon in the night visions never made an appearance and wasn't even a threat but instead it was an old wizard. This wizard could create dragons and make them listen to him however in the end his goal of killing a single person was a little silly and he didn't seem to be all that evil besides rambling on and on. The story also pointed out that the wizard needs his staff to be destroyed to die permanently and when the heroes kill him they don't remember this even though it's been repeated enough. And when he's burnt to ash why don't they look for the staff as at no point was it mentioned that he had it on his person.

This does read like a young reader novel so maybe I'm thinking too much in it but I bought it only as I wanted to try a new fantasy story and didn't check the tags at the time so this could all be on me for expecting a bit more.

it took me a few chapters to really get into the.swing of the book but once the adventure hit I couldn't stop listening. Such a fun story that had me constantly wanting to know what will happen next.
