Resumen del Editor

“Few people can communicate how the economy actually works better than Kyla Scanlon.”—Morgan Housel, author of The Psychology of Money

An illustrated guide to the mad math and terrible terminology of economics, from one of the internet’s favorite financial educators

Is our national debt really a threat? What is a “mild” recession, exactly? If you’re worried about your bank account balance, job security, or mortgage rate, what data should you be keeping tabs on?

For anyone trying to make sense of disorienting headlines, there’s no better interpreter than Kyla Scanlon. Through her trademark blend of witty illustrations, creative analogies, and insights from behavioral economics, literature, and philosophy, Scanlon breaks down everything you need to know about how money and markets really work. This indispensable handbook reveals the hidden forces driving key economic outcomes, the most common myths to steer clear of, and the dusty, outdated assumptions that constrain our political imagination, offering a bold new path to building a prosperous society that works for everyone.

This audiobook includes a downloadable PDF with graphs and illustrations from the book.

Reseñas de la Crítica

“Kyla’s singular style is approachable, witty, and endlessly informative, helping readers decipher everything from the labor force to housing to what Jay Powell’s thinking.”—Kai Ryssdal, host of NPR’s Marketplace

“Kyla is a master at explaining even the most complex and arcane subjects with verve, wit and creativity—whether it’s the mechanics of the US debt ceiling, the ‘vibecession’ or the nuances of meme investing. We’re lucky we have Kyla around to show us how it all works.”—Tracy Alloway, Bloomberg journalist and co-host of the Odd Lots podcast

A modern realistic understanding of the economy

Kyla does explains the complexities of the modern economy vert simplistically. She also has a grasp of how many Americans under the age of 45 feel about the current state of living, and wonderfully explains how that is shaping the current & future job market/economy.
Overall very easy to read and should be read by anyone over 15.

Titled for beginners, reads intermediate/advanced

Overall, good content. However, book is titled like it would be a great book for beginners but it reads for a more intermediate to advanced audience.

Ideas

Government debt is good? For real? This is the first time I stepped into a book about economics that has a liberal tone to it. I couldn’t digest much of it. The book itself is informative but some of the ideas I couldn’t disagree more with.

Vibe session! This book is awesome

I will forever refer to consumer sentiment as simply vibing. This is the most accurate description of our economy in the most gen z language and I love it. Professor G is a smart dude for bringing Kyla on the podcast. I didn’t think it was possible to make fed speak less boring but she found a way. Good freaking job.

a must read prior to upcoming elections

While the U.S. Dollar is the contemporary world reserve currency, this information by Kyla Scanlon is internationally relevant

Chapter on GDP goes woke

Was a good primer on markets and economy until GDP goes woke. Basically objective until we get to GDP.

Growth is described as an unsustainable plan causing inequality, meaningless lives, and destruction of the planet. Why anyone would insert this type of woke opinion into what was to be a factual book......

The author fails to understand growth in the bigger context of time and abundance. Just 400 years ago, the average mildly depressed millenial age adult would be illiterate and living in abject poverty.

Great Insights

Very clear and easy to follow, enough detail to understand concepts but doesn’t get caught in the weeds.

Only complaint would be I wish the accompanying PDF was outlined with timestamps or labeled and called out in the recording.
