Story
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

Story
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Like the men whose epic stories Jon Krakauer has told in his previous bestsellers, Pat Tillman was an irrepressible individualist and iconoclast. In May 2002, Tillman walked away from his $3.6 million NFL contract to enlist in the United States Army. He was deeply troubled by 9/11, and he felt a strong moral obligation to join the fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Two years later, he died on a desolate hillside in southeastern Afghanistan.

Story
Thoreau's classic account of the solitary life, describing his attempts to simplify his life and sort out his priorities by living alone in a cabin beside Walden Pond for nearly two years, is one of the most influential books ever written. The bible of the environmental movement, Walden vividly portrays Thoreau's reverence for nature, and his understanding of the idea that nature is made up of crucially interrelated parts.

Story
At 28,251 feet, the world's second-tallest mountain, K2 thrusts skyward out of the Karakoram Range of northern Pakistan. Climbers regard it as the ultimate achievement in mountaineering, with good reason. Four times as deadly as Everest, K2 has claimed the lives of seventy-seven climbers since 1954. In August 2008 eleven climbers died in a single thirty-six-hour period on K2–the worst single-event tragedy in the mountain's history and the second-worst in the long chronicle of mountaineering in the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges.

Story
The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America - majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way - and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

Joe Simpson, with just his partner, Simon Yates, tackled the unclimbed West Face of the remote 21,000-foot Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in June of 1985. But before they reached the summit, disaster struck. A few days later, Simon staggered into Base Camp, exhausted and frostbitten, to tell their non-climbing companion that Joe was dead. For three days he wrestled with guilt as they prepared to return home. Then a cry in the night took them out with torches, where they found Joe, badly injured.

In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-gestating memoir. A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and now grieved. Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, lay in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them.

She’s seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can't shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot. Her new boyfriend is utterly perfect. He's charming, handsome, and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet.

Worth the read
I enjoyed this book. Yes, it is an expanded version of what was a magazine article, but the additional information on other similar people who did similar "into the wild" expeditions was interesting. I found Chris McCandless fascinating. Although I never did what he did, his desire for this adventure struck a chord with me. I always think - "in my next life...." what will I do? I have always thoroughly enjoyed the times I have spent extended time in nature, away from a "normal" life. I've camped alone and with my husband in remote areas with no "modern conveniences", including one experience that included a bear attack (though I was not injured). These experiences rank very high on my list of best of my life! I do not think McCandless was completely unprepared for his Alaska adventure. I won't do a spoiler alert but suffice to say, I think he could have done a couple more things to live through this adventure, but overall, he was more than a little unlucky. I am not sure I want to see the movie. I am generally disappointed in doing so. I'm glad to have read the book.

Interesting Listen
This is ok I guess after you have listened to all the true 4-5 star rated audios.
Wanted to get through it and have it end. I'm of the same train of thought that
you have to be expertly prepared to face the Alaskan Wilderness. Look at how
many locals die by being unprepared and to have an outsider take unwarranted
chances is senseless. You may be able to brave the weather some of the time
but you got to be prepared. Have food , good communication, and have a plan

Thought the author forced himself into the story
What made the experience of listening to Into the Wild the most enjoyable?
I liked the way Chris' struggle is depicted
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Tame out all the authors tie ins to his own life
Any additional comments?
It's not a biography. It's a good story, but a lot of it has more to do with the authors life and struggle than with Chris'

Enjoyed Immensely as one with Wanderlust myself
Since I seem to have a need to travel somewhat unconventionally as much as possible I could relate in many ways to McCandless, the author, and other characters. Also very much enjoyed well-chosen quotes from other authors throughout. I liked the narrator. I read this book and listened at the same time.

it's hard to understand someone who has a free spirit and doesn't follow conventional ways. It doesn't make it wrong, just hard to understand. The research it takes to follow Chris's journey is extensive and worth listening to hear more about someone who had to do it their own way.
